Chapter Twelve
Avery had been doing a lot of nothing for the rest of the day. While she tried hard to keep herself busy and productive, she was eager to hear what had happened at the police station. The excitement that someone had come forward and confessed to the crime was bubbling within her.
It would mean that it was all over, Charles could close yet another case, and they could celebrate it. Already, Avery had chosen a good bottle of wine that she knew Charles would enjoy, in the hopes that their shared drink that evening would be to celebrate the end of the case.
He wasnât expected to show up at her house for another fifteen minutes, and sheâd already poured his wine into his glass. Avery was exhausted from trying to keep herself busy that day. It was hard work to pretend to be occupied with tasks. But if she really thought about it, it felt as if she hadnât really completed anything at all that day.
Sprinkles sighed heavily from his bed and tucked his paws in closer to his face. The house was a little too quiet for Avery to enjoy. So, she put on some music to fill the space and keep her distracted while she waited the final few minutes for Charles.
But each minute that passed felt like fifteen minutes. Eventually, Avery began to count the books on her shelf, hoping it would pass the time. Instead, it made her a little sleepy.
All that went away when she heard a knock at the door. Avery leaped to her feet and picked up their wine glasses. She moved so fast toward the door that she risked spilling the wine over the edge of the glasses.
When she opened the door to greet Charles, she handed him a glass of wine.
âFinally!â she sang. âIâve been so excited for your visit.â
Charles looked to be in an irritable mood. But he smiled when he saw her, happily took the glass from her, and kissed her on the cheek in greeting.
âIâm glad to see you, too,â Charles said kindly.
âIâve got a fire going. This evening looks like it might turn out to be a cold one,â Avery said as she ushered him inside.
Charles took a big sip of his wine and smiled. âThis is an excellent wine,â he said.
âI thought Iâd break out some of the good stuff,â Avery said. âYou know, to celebrate.â
âWhat are we celebrating?â he asked.
Charles got a sudden look of panic on his face as if heâd forgotten an important date. She could see how he scanned his brain for memories that might help him piece it together.
âYou got a confession,â Avery said cheerfully. âAnother case closed!â
She lifted her glass in the air, waiting for him to bring his up to meet hers. But he didnât. Instead, he flashed her a grimace that told her things hadnât gone all that well.
âNot closed yet, sorry,â he said, taking another sip of the wine.
âOh?â Avery responded.
A disappointed sigh escaped her as she sat down on the sofa.
