Chapter Thirteen
Curious, she smacked her hands together to rid them of crumbs, wiped them on a napkin, and went over to the lawn where the DCI stood.
He started walking, and she endeavored to keep up with him. She had a long stride for a woman, but the policemanâs was longer, and evidently more impatient. They reached the Manor House in short order.
The interviews were taking place in her fatherâs sitting room near the front of the house. She had always disliked the room. It was cluttered and smelled of her fatherâs pipe. It was dark, the walls hung with her fatherâs hunting trophiesâstaring dead animals.
Catherine sat on the hard dining room chair they had brought into the room. The Detective Chief Inspector sat comfortably across from her in her fatherâs favorite leather wing-backed armchair. She handed him the newspaper.
âHave you seen this?â
âThe devil!â said the policeman. âWhoâs behind it?â
âMy fatherâs furious, as you can imagine. Iâve questioned all the archaeology group, and theyâre upset, too. I donât think any of them did it. Seems to me, it was one of your lot.â
The DCI shifted in his chair. âI expect itâs easiest to blame the police. Iâll look into it.â He shook his head, his mouth grim. âThisâll bring the press down on us in droves.â
âItâll be hard for them to find a place to stay anywhere in Lostwithiel. The innâs full.â
âBodmin will be glad of their custom, Iâm sure.â He fixed her with his dark eyes. âNow, Miss Tregowyn, you have been accommodating so far. I imagine we would have got on to the mine eventually, but you saved us a lot of bother and time. Have you reached any conclusions about who took the Roman tile? I may be wrong, but this question seems it might be at the bottom of the murder.â
âI am very interested in Flash . . . er . . . Professor Austin. He had a good opportunity to get the key. Sir Alfred was a heavy drinker. Evidently, he got drunk most nights. It would have been easy to take a wax impression of his key to the safe once heâd passed out. Plus, Professor Austin appears to be strapped for cash if his shabby clothing is anything to go by. Have you eliminated him as a murder suspect?â
âAll in good time,â DCI Carew said, his tone impatient. âFrom what I understand, Mr. Nichols had no need for a wax impression. He had his own key to the vault. Why are you convinced of his innocence?â
She thought for a moment, then said, âCharacter mostly. Heâs very dedicated to the work.â
âI understand that he, too, is in want of cash.â
âI think everyone is. As you know, times are hard.â Catherine was annoyed. Did the policeman have something concrete against Sonny?
As though sensing her question, the DCI said, âI know you are very good friends with his cousin, but I wouldnât dismiss the young man in the matter of the murder. As you know, I have a witness that saw him out and about that night.
