Chapter 19
Making a detour to stop off at home before going into town, Clarice let the dogs out of the car.
âHello, darlinâ, youâre home early.â Leaving the cat barn and crossing the garden, Sandra met Clarice as she went towards the house.
âThere was a feral in the trap.â Clarice moved her head towards the car. âIâm on my way to see Jonathan.â
âHello, lovelies.â Sandra turned her attention to the dogs. âWhat about the new girl â Bella, the greyhound â will you meet her?â
âIâm hoping I will.â Clarice watched Blue and Jazz running in circles around her friend. âI didnât want to leave these two in the car. Iâm not sure how long Iâll have to wait for Jonathan.â She looked at her watch. âHeâll have started surgery by now. I want him to see the feral and tell me about Bellaâs progress. I imagine Iâll be hanging around.â
âI noticed youâve tidied up the annexe next to the kitchen for Bella. Itâs easier to have her in the house,â Sandra said.
âYes, we can pop in and out to check on her.â
âWhere will this feral go once Jonathanâs given it the all-clear? Is it Alex, the seed merchantâs wife?â
âYes, sheâs next in line,â Clarice said. âShe had a home visit â itâll be a lovely place for a feral to retire. Could you give her a ring, please? Tell her to phone Jonathan to find out when he can be collected.â
âIâll phone as soon as I get inside. Are you sure the catâs male?â
âIâm pretty sure, with the thickness of the neck and the smell. Jonathan will do all the usual business before he can go out â worming, neutering, flea treatment, and ear-tipping the left ear. That way, if he roams, people can see it from a distance. It means he wonât be unnecessarily trapped and anaesthetised again.â
Sandra nodded as she bent down to rub Jazzâs ears. âYouâre better here at home with your Auntie Sandra,â she crooned. âDo they need feeding?â
âThanks, Sandra. They didnât have a big breakfast; they can have something dry â some biscuits.â
âIâll take them inside, darlinâ. You get off. See you back for lunch.â
Clarice returned to the car to finish the journey to the vet. Once sheâd explained the purpose of her visit, Pam, one of the nurses, suggested she take the covered cat trap into the back room.
âJonathan picked up your message. Heâs going to be tied up for a while.â Her eyes went to the crowded waiting room as she came out from behind the reception desk. âAfter weâve put him in the back, you can go and sit with Bella if you like. I expect youâre itching to meet her.â
âYes please.â Clarice beamed. âIâd hoped I might meet her today.â
âI know Jonathan intended to phone you later with a progress report,â Pam said. âWith your call about the feral, you beat him to it.â
âDid it go OK yesterday â the operation?â
âHe said it was a great success, no problems. But heâll talk about it when he comes through.
