The afternoon had grown warm, but that didnât keep the inside of Larryâs truck from feeling frosty as he drove Rosa back to the Forrester mansion.
âLarry?â Rosa started before opening the passenger door. âIt was a long time ago.â
âThat songââ
âCould be about anybody. Or nobody. Iâm not the only one who drives a white Corvette.â
âYouâre the only one I know.â Larry lowered his chin. âThat song was written recently. You bought your Corvette just this summer.â He let out a defeated breath. âI canât help but feel the fool, Rosa. You and Miguel havinâ a secret past.â
âIt was no secret.â
Larryâs eyes caught Rosaâs. âIt was to me.â
Rosa felt sheepish. âCan I make it up to you?â
âI just need a bit of time.â He leaned over and gave Rosa a quick kiss on the cheek. âI told Dr. Philpott Iâd stop in at the morgue and catch up on some paperwork.â
Rosa couldnât tell if Larry had planned to go back to work all along or if he suddenly preferred to spend the rest of the day without her.
âAll right,â she said. âBye.â Then to her faithful cat, âLetâs go, Diego.â
The Forrester mansion housed six family membersâAunt Louisa, Grandma Sally, Clarence, Julie, Gloria, and Rosaâalong with several staff members who worked in the house and the yards. There was always someone about, and Rosa made a point of remembering names and greeting each one with a smile.
Releasing Diego, she raced him upstairs to her bedroom, where she slipped out of her shoes and removed her hat and gloves. She washed her face and had just reapplied her makeup when one maid, Doris, knocked on her door. âSeñora Gomez sent me to look for you. You have a telephone call.â
Rosa got to her feet. âDo you know who it is?â
âThe police, miss.â
Rosa picked up the call from her auntâs office.
âGot it, Señora Gomez,â she said into the receiver, and when Rosa heard the click from the housekeeper hanging up the kitchen telephone, she said, âMiss Reed here.â
âRosa, itâs Miguel.â
âHi.â Rosaâs mind flashed to the uncomfortable encounter at the farmersâ market. âIf youâre calling about Carlotta,â or the song, âitâs nothing.â
âCarlotta is famous for talking before she thinks, but thatâs not why Iâm calling.â
âOkay?â Rosa prompted, her curiosity piqued. Miguel was quick to appease it.
âWe have another body.â
âOh no. Is it related to the Orlando Belmonte case?â She couldnât think of reason why Miguel would feel compelled to tell her otherwise.
âNot officially, but I think thereâs a connection.â
âOh?â
âJerry Glass is dead.â
