Chapter 11

“Coffee?” Derek suggested as he joined us in the reception.

“Aye,” I said. “Definitely.”

Derek, Edel and I headed up the stairs to the main room, and Derek led the way to the holy coffee machine. We weaved our way through the workstations, and I saw that Edel was extra careful not to knock any papers off any desks this time.

Once we all had our drinks, we held them tightly and allowed the heat to warm our hands while we gathered around Derek’s desk again.

“I can’t believe Bram didn’t press charges,” Edel said and shook her head.

“I can,” I said. “His mother’s ill, and he needs the money for the carer.”

“And his employer nearly killed him!” she replied.

“All I know is that I’m going to get George behind bars,” I said. “Even if he didn’t kill Junior, he’s going away for a long, long time.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Edel said with an excited grin. “What’s the next step, then?”

“I think we should go back to the hotel,” I said. “We can go over everything again and throw around some ideas without all this racket.”

“Okay, let’s go,” Edel said.

We took ourselves and our coffees back through the office and down the stairs.

“See you later, Manny,” I said.

“What are we saying?” he chuckled. “An hour?”

“Probably,” I laughed.

We walked out into pouring rain and ran over to the car. I unlocked the door, and we all dove into our seats before we were drenched. Thankfully, the coffee survived as well, and I sipped on mine during the short drive to the hotel. Edel and Derek did the same as I maneuvered through the busy streets. It was all cars, though, and almost no pedestrians except for a couple of brave students who hurried towards the nearest pub as fast as they could.

When we arrived at the hotel, I took a quick gulp and then looked at my companions. I nodded, and we all opened our doors and scrambled from the car. I locked the doors as we sprinted to the hotel steps, and we dashed into the building like soldiers diving for cover.

“Where did all this rain come from all of a sudden?” Edel remarked as we shook the droplets off our blazers.

“Welcome to St. Andrews,” Derek chuckled.

We trudged up the stairs towards my hotel room after a quick wave to the man behind the reception desk. I admired the paintings again as I went up the steps, and I wondered who had painted them and what their life had been like.

But I was pulled from my train of thought as quickly as I had boarded it because leaning against my door was another brown envelope, the same type as before.

“What the--” Derek said.

“Another one?” Edel remarked.

I looked around in case there was anyone around that could have seen who put it there.

“Edel, go ask reception if they saw anyone,” I told her.

“On it,” she said with a nod and dashed off down the stairs.

A door opened further along the hall, and a cleaner emerged from a room a couple of doors down.
