CHAPTER 38

As Drake drove down the road, he found himself humming Garth Brook’s song “I Got Friends in Low Places.” Ain’t that God’s truth, he thought, recalling his mother’s often used expression. Working undercover for years introduced Drake to some of the worst offenders: killers, rapists, drug dealers—you name it and he had met them. And had probably shared a beer or two with them.

Today he was going to meet with one of the good guys, a fellow undercover cop. At least he used to be a white hat guy. Sometimes, when you spend too much time with scum, it rubs off on you. You lose sight of decency, of your humanity. But he had no reason to believe Travis was anything other than the good cop he had known since they were rookies together.

After leaving the paved county road, he followed Travis’ directions down several dirt roads. Eventually, the camper trailer by the pond that Travis had described came into view.

As Travis instructed, Drake waited in the car until he saw Travis open the door and wave him in.

Inside the camper, Drake had to adjust his eyes to the dim light. Glancing around, he saw clothes strewn on the floor and a half-empty bottle of Jack Daniels on the chipped laminate counter that separated the tiny kitchen area from the rest of the camper.

“It ain’t the Ritz, but it’s home.” Travis embraced Drake in a hearty man hug. “How you been, man?”

"Mi good, mon. How 'bout yuh?"

Travis laughed. “I’ve missed your crazy accent.”

Drake pushed a pair of soiled jeans aside and sat on the stained cushion of the built-in sofa. “Good thing is, the women love the island talk too.”

“Rightly so, man. You here as Whistler today or someone else?”

“I’m on loan to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department for a few months. Just doing some work on a case.”

“That means you must be up for a promotion.”

“Not likely. Bowman County just can’t afford much training. You know how it goes.”

Travis shook his head. “Don’t I ever, man. But you said you need my help. What’s up?”

“You still working the gangs around here?”

“I’ll be pulling out soon. Been here too long. Things are starting to get dicey.”

Drake pulled up a photo on his phone. “I’m working a homicide and this sketch came up. Recognize it?”

Travis took the phone and spread the image so he could study the details. “Whew, man. You don’t want to mess with them.” He handed the phone back to Drake.

“Is this a gang symbol?”

Travis pulled up a flimsy wooden stool and sat in front of Drake. “I wouldn’t call it a gang. More like a secret society.”

“What’s your involvement with this secret society?”

Travis ran his fingers through his hair. “Drugs and money, they run together, as you know. I got hooked up with this gang that was bringing drugs into Bowman County on auto transport carriers. Can you believe that?”

“I’d believe anything about the ingenuity of scum.”

“The carriers loaded up the cars with drugs and carried them state to state.
