Thursday was a free day for the writers, and no one had asked Cat for any one-on-one time to talk. Yet. So at breakfast, she waited for Seth to show up and asked if she could go with him to Tom and Linda’s cabin.

Seth glanced at Shauna. “Are you okay with being here alone with Cat’s writer friends?”

“As long as the two of you don’t disappear until Monday, yes, I can handle being by myself for a few hours.” Shauna set a stack of pancakes in front of Seth. “What are you looking for, Miss Curious Cat?”

“Why do you think,” Cat started then shook her head. “Never mind, you’re right. I need to see where Jewel was killed. Why was she going there? And was she meeting someone? Jewel was adamant that she had to be here in this session. We didn’t tell anyone we were doing the reunion section in January. She didn’t know Linda would be here.”

Shauna sat down at the table with a cup of coffee. “I thought that was odd too. Now, I understood her reasoning. Sometimes jobs are less than happy when you take off time. But I felt like there was more to the story. Something she wasn’t telling us.”

“You can’t think that Jewel thought Tom Cook was still alive.” Seth looked from Cat to Shauna. “Seriously?”

“I don’t know. Uncle Pete let slip that Jewel was pregnant when she died. What if she thought she was the only one who knew Tom Cook was alive?” Cat looked at her friends. “Am I seeing zebras?”

Seeing zebras was the trio’s code for taking a simple answer and looking for a more complicated, less likely answer. Seth and Shauna paused and Cat could see the look pass between the two of them. “You think I’m going off the deep end, don’t you?”

Shauna reached for her hand. “I wouldn’t say that, but it’s kind of farfetched.”

Cat banged her head against the table. “Fine, I’ll look for horses. Besides, Uncle Pete will probably have this case tied up today. You know he likes having time with Shirley when she comes to town.”

She also knew that her uncle wouldn’t shortchange the investigation just because he had company in town. Cat decided to let this sleeping dog lie and change the subject. “Anyway, what time do you think you’re heading out to the cabin?”

“Linda already told me she’s not coming. She left me a list.” Seth glanced at his watch. “So we can leave around ten if that works. I’ve got some things to get done and I’ll need to separate Mr. Peeps and Sam into different rooms. He doesn’t like that cat much. Which is weird since he loves Angelica.”

“Sam’s smart and he knows that it’s Mrs. Rice’s cat.” She stood and put her plate in the sink. “Okay, I’m going upstairs to try to write a bit. Come get me when you’re ready.”

“Sounds like we’re playing hooky from school.” Seth grinned. “We should have a code word and you shouldn’t open your office door to anyone who doesn’t know it.
