Friday

Piper called the bank to verify her account balance. It was $9,738 lower than she expected. She sighed and dialed Chief Maxwell.

“Maxwell,” his deep voice rumbled.

“Chief Maxwell, this is Piper Haydn. I called the bank, and there’s almost $10,000 missing.”

“The amount from your fundraising account?”

“Yes, sir,” Piper said.

“Good work. I’ll check on this. Your academy can open on Monday if you’re ready. My officers finished there today, and the cleaning crew was already working.”

“Thank you. Anything else?”

“No interviewing people.”

Piper sighed.

“I mean it.” His voice carried a warning. “Do you hear me?”

“Loud and clear, but I want to know who did this and why. I want my life back,” she whispered.

“I understand, Miss Haydn, but the investigation is my job, not yours. I’m serious.”

“Oh, do you have any information on how Daniel died?”

“Nothing I can share at the moment,” he said.

Piper mustered her courage. “Am I a suspect, Chief Maxwell?” Piper shuffled and waited. “Sir?”

“I am not at liberty to discuss the manner of death, suspects, or information.”

A shiver slithered up Piper’s spine. “You mean I am?”

Chief Maxwell blew out a breath. “Listen, Miss Haydn, let me do my job. Please?”

“Yes, sir.” Piper hung up the phone and plopped onto a stool at the kitchen counter. She wrapped her fingers around a mug full of the tea Maisy had talked her into last night. The lemon balm eased her nerves, but tea was no match for frayed emotions.

What will I do, God? This mess is too big.

She sipped tea and tried to plan for her day, but her mind churned and snarled with pieces of the mystery. She leaned her head onto her hands and fell asleep.
