Research

Doing research with Barbie felt very familiar. I wasn’t able to count the number of times Barbie and I had crowded around the computer in the Windsor Suite to dig into someone’s life. Today it felt like an odd thing to do which was all because Jermaine would normally be helping us or bustling around in the background fetching gin and tonics or preparing food. Also though, it felt strange because we already knew who the bad guy was and somewhere beyond the walls of the suite, a manhunt raged.

If Alistair hoped for a swift resolution to his problem, he didn’t get it. At least, I assumed he didn’t because there was no fresh announcement to tell the people on board the ship that the situation was resolved.

The hour Chester had to get to and board the flight he booked came and went. Was booking the flight a decoy to make his pursuers look the wrong way, or was he too petrified by fear to make his run from the ship? The Aurelia was an enormous vessel with more hiding places than could be searched in an hour. If he did the wise thing and stayed put, he eliminated the chance of being spotted and he might be able to stay undetected for days or weeks.

While elsewhere, the crew looked for the killer, we delved into what linked Chester to the billionaires next door. Barbie was all over his social media for a while, confirming what her good friend Deepa had told me about his online stalking. He commented on some of Shandy’s posts which was how he knew they were going on the cruise, where they were going to be, and that it was their anniversary. His comments rarely extended beyond an emoji or a thumbs up and there was nothing malicious or concerning. The lack of his hatred displayed in his comments demonstrated a rational mind – anything else would have drawn attention his way and most likely have resulted in Shandy blocking him. I also knew he was intelligent, resourceful, and capable since he’d worked out how to sneak a weapon on board and plan a murder that he might have got away with if he hadn’t missed and hit Grace instead.

His interaction with Shandy’s social media feed was interesting but it shed no light on why he chose to target her or why he hated Howard. Whatever it was, it remained elusive and frustrating. Since Molly wished to help, she had been assisting Barbie and I had been working with Sam, keeping him entertained in many ways, but our search into Chester Ulmer failed to extend beyond basic background information. I didn’t have access to the sort of software or search engines that could access financial records or delve deep enough into his life to find what linked him.

When the knock on my door came, I was all but ready to give up, my finger poised on the mouse clicker to look at a website landing page associated with his name.
