A cruiser and another dark sedan were parked in the driveway of the house on Ellsworth Street when they arrived, so Hannah parked the Subaru Outback on the street.
A middle-aged man in a suit opened the door in response to their knock
“I’m sorry, we aren’t buying anything today.” He tried to close the door.
“Wait! Is Officer Tatum or Officer Mason here? We were supposed to meet them here.” Hannah explained with one foot in the door.
The man in the suit glared at her foot, then focused his ire at her face. “Jenkins, I need you up front.”
Hannah didn’t move and looked straight at the suit, but Tamar backed up a little. A police officer approached the door from behind the suit.
“What’s up?”
“These young women are asking for Officers Tatum and Mason. What’s going on?”
“Hi girls. I’m Officer Jenkins. Can you provide identification please?” He didn’t look that much older than the girls.
Confused, but compliant, Hannah handed Officer Jenkins her driver’s license. Tamar did likewise.
“Okay, girls. Thank you.” Officer Jenkins handed them back their licenses and turned to the suit. “The girl with her foot in the door is Hannah Bertolet and the other one is Tamar Bertolet. They’re the ones who called in the home invasion to begin with and Hannah is the one who is helping with Mrs. Tedesco. Their names are all over the log you reviewed. And as you know, Officers Tatum and Mason are the ones who caught this case.”
“Girls, this is Agent Rudy of the DEA. Not the friendliest, but after your last discovery here…”
Agent Rudy’s face turned red, and both girls tried to stifle a chuckle. Agent Rudy’s scowl suggested they didn’t quite succeed.
Officer Jenkins ignored the agent and continued. “Mason and Tatum are on another call. They’ll be here as soon as they can. In the meantime, you’re stuck with me, my partner, Officer Thompson, and Jackson. Oh, and Agent Rudy, you’ve already met.”
“Jackson’s found something!” The shout came from the back of the house, and Agent Rudy stalked off with an ugly look to Officer Jenkins. He opened the door and motioned the girls in. “You might as well come see what all the excitement is and meet Jackson and his handler, my partner.”
