“Wow!”

Julietta’s soft gasp had Damon crossing his eyes. If only he were the reason for such a sexy sound. At least it was his equipment causing the reaction. Just not the equipment he had in mind.

Sssss.

“I’m not surprised,” she said.

Julietta ran a hand over the various microscopes, monitors, and the other bits and bobs of the cellular imaging system he’d ordered and installed.

“What are you not surprised at?”

“Well, I’m not surprised the Academy allowed you to set up a laboratory and clinic here. This is some pricey equipment for sure, and I don’t think that one is even available on the market yet,” she said.

She pointed to the modified tech that would allow for them to detect if any attempt at gene editing had been tried on his patients.

“Advancements in biosciences are beneficial. The director didn’t realize I was bringing this level of equipment at first, after that I hardly had to persuade them to let me set up a HOLE on campus,” he said by way of explanation.

“Some are just on this side of science fiction,” she replied with quiet amusement.

“I guess so,” he said, shocked and pleased that they could speak about such things. His own parents hated talking shop at home. His mother preferred to discuss inane things such as the weather or what was on TV. Father, a surgeon, seemed just as content, but Damon had always desired more.

“Groundbreaking tech like CRISPR is going to change everything,” Julietta said.

“It is already doing that, Julietta,” Damon replied, inching closer.

He took the sample he’d gotten from Julietta and inserted the vial into the tube where the blood would be prepared for analysis. A colleague, who was also an innovator, had built the machine himself. As a silent partner in the man’s firm, Damon had access to it before it was available to the public.

“What is that?”

“I am going to test your cells for any evidence of gene editing.”

“Why do you suspect that?” she asked, her large brown eyes going impossibly wider at the thought.

“What are you keeping from me, Julietta?” Damon asked.

“Nothing,” she said, trying to laugh, but it sounded strained and fake.

Damon had enough waiting. He crossed the room and stood in front of her, placing his hands on her upper arms. His eyes bore into hers as he tried to figure the little minx out.

“So, uh, are you using any cadets in the lab?”

“Julietta, don’t change the subject. Talk to me. What is going on?”

“Why should I tell you anything? ’Cause you’re my doctor?”

“What? No. I care about you!”

“Yeah, right. The whole time I was in HOLE you yelled at me, berated me, and ignored me. Not necessarily in that order.”

Stunned at her accurate description of his behavior, Damon released the hold he had on her arms. She was right. He’d been an ass.

“You’re right. I was discourteous and unprofessional, but that was only because I, well, I was jealous.”

“You were jealous? Of me?”

“Yes, of you and that freaking bull who saved you. If not for
