The diameter at the base of the cone was five acres. The height of the cone was just over 230 feet. All the scientists agreed in the report that removing the cone would be virtually impossible. The mayor couldn’t believe it at first because: Impossible? Who tells the mayor of Chicago impossible?

Morning after the report was delivered, he called the lead eggheads into his office to dress them down for saying impossible, but, turned out, they did not deserve it. They said that, first of all, the cone started down deeper in the earth than the base of the crater. What their report was calling the cone was really just the top of the cone: the part of the cone that showed above the base of the crater. They referred him to page 117 of the report, which had diagrams the mayor couldn’t make heads or tails of.

They explained the diagrams:

The bottom of the cone was even bigger than the part that stuck out from the base of the crater, they explained. The bottom of the cone, in fact, was almost as far down below the base of the crater, they said, as the top of the cone was above the base of the crater, and the farther down it went, the wider it got, till you got to the bottom.

“So I’m thinking about a Hershey’s Kiss,” the mayor said to the scientists. “You take a Hershey’s Kiss, tear the wrapper from the top, but stop tearing halfway. Now look at what you got: if the Kiss was the cone, the brown part’s the part we’d see if the detritus and junk got removed from the crater. Silver part’s the part we would not see unless we dug into the base of the crater surrounding the cone. Would you say my metaphorical suppository’s accurate?”

They would. They did.
