SEVENTEEN
Moreland came in, moving into the middle of the living room, looking around and scanning everything as he did. I got the sense that he was being more careful than nosy. He turned toward me. I had closed the door and was in the kitchen area, standing behind the island that separated the two rooms. I opened the box of donuts.
âDonut, detective?â
He laughed and waved it off. My first sense was he was the easy-going type, but Iâd been wrong about these things many times before.
He was young, maybe early 30s, and well-dressed but not in a showy way. His sport coat looked off the rack but fit him well, his khakis were pressed, and his shirt and tie matched perfectly. He even had cop shoes on, black Florsheim Oxfords, polished to a high gloss. He looked to be in great shape, and his blond hair was neat and trimmed. He seemed polite but to the point.
âWhat can I help you with, detective?â
He smiled and asked, âCan we sit, Mr. Shore? And please call me John.â
It was my turn to smile. âThatâs usually my line. Sure, but only if you call me Tommy.â
I moved around the counter and came over and sat down in my easy chair, sweeping my hand out to signal him to sit on the sofa. I was aware that I had made that gesture twice in the last two minutes. A regular Vanna White. He sat down and folded his hands together, prayer-like, resting them on one knee.
âTommy, I understand youâve been hired by the family of Mr. Earl Scosa to help find out what might have happened to him?â
I nodded. âWell, not so much the family as by Carla Vitter, his sister-in-law. Earlâs late wife was her sister. Carlaâs husband, Paul? Not a fan. But my agreement was with Carla.â
âWould you be willing to tell me what youâve found out so far?â
I hesitated. I didnât want to tip my hand before I found out what this was about.
âHow about we trade off? I answered your questions, you answer mine. Iâll go first. Whatâs the Connecticut State Police doing involved with this? Iâm actually surprised the state police has detectives.â
He looked at me and then looked away. I thought he might be staring out the window, but you couldnât really see much out there, save an alleyway that led down to Temple Street. I waited. After a minute, he looked back at me.
âNot many people know everything the state police does. Most folks think itâs all about stopping speeders on the highway. Which is true, we are key to traffic enforcement, but we also do crime scene analysis, missing persons, investigate fringe groups, and anything else needed to protect the citizens of Connecticut.â
He smiled. âSorry if that sounded a little rah-rah.â
I waved it off.
âAlways great to hear someone whoâs passionate talk about work. Go on.â
He had kept smiling through all this, but he paused, stopped smiling, and looked at me.
âOkay, here goes. Earl Scosa was an undercover agent for us.
