A Trip into Town

Kieran

It was, from my knowledge and experience, a typical post-storm morning in the Black Forest, with the scent of drying pine needles and the relieved sounds of chirps and scurrying of small woodland creatures wafting into the cave. I had awoken with Natasha still slumbering atop me, her head peacefully dozing on my chest. I watched for half an hour, then longer, not daring to move a muscle and disturb the rest she so sorely needed.

With the feeling of her head so light and ethereal on my chest, I realized that it was a perfect moment I didn’t want to be over.

Not yet.

The previous night, when I felt the warmth, magic, and electricity of our lips finally meeting, I didn’t think anything could top that perfect moment.

Yet the very next morning, seeing Natasha resting atop me, her pearly hair flowing over my chest, I knew it was another moment I’d want to lock into my memory forever.

It was the sound of Natasha's stomach growling that eventually broke the silence between the two of us. She stirred only slightly, but she stirred nonetheless. I could easily smell the leftover meat and cheese I had cooked for her the previous evening. The fire we had used was reduced to gently glowing embers by the time I had woken up, but the foods were still good for her to eat, preserved by the chilly forest night, and early morning, air.

When Natasha did stir, I heard myself inhaling sharply, readying to discuss with her whatever our next moves should be. Momentarily I regretted this, as she had not necessarily been ready to wake up head and I may have disturbed her sleep. However, after another solid two minutes of resting peacefully, Natasha's eyes sprung open and she looked into mine.

“Did you just wake up, too?” was the first thing Natasha asked me.

“No. I woke up about an hour ago,” I told her truthfully.

“My my, were you not comfortable, then?” she asked with a smile.

“Sort of, but I could not dare interrupt your sleep until you woke naturally.”

“You really should have.” Natasha slid gracefully from my chest and began rising to her feet in a single fluid movement. “I'll be fine.”

I started the process of stretching my limbs and my neck, my body feeling stiff from staying awake in the same position for so long. “I would never dream of it,” I told Natasha. “Although, we cannot stay in this cave forever.”

“Why not?” she asked. “I mean, not forever, of course. But for now it seems like a comparatively safe option.”

“It's not ideal, though,” I answered her, my hand rubbing against the back of my neck. “We need to check in with the Congregation as soon as we are able, and we're going to need a new base of operations. We can't just be running all over the country, sleeping in caves.”

“I suppose you're right,” Natasha said with a sigh. “You mentioned moving south last night, so you could sniff out any Congregation assets or operations as we did.
