The ride back down the mountain was torture, full of silence and tension. And things changed subtly between them over the next several weeks. Cole was more short-tempered than ever before, and Kate found new things to do to avoid spending a lot of time with him. Fortunately, work was keeping her plenty busy these days, and she had enough friends in town that finding things to do in the evenings was not that difficult. She and Cole still saw each other at functions, and occasionally joined others for dinners or movies, but there was a very real strain between them now. Kate sometimes wondered why she didn’t just give in to Cole, since they didn’t have much of a friendship to speak of these days anyway.

One Friday evening, after spending a particularly trying day at work, she went out to a local restaurant after work with a group of friends from work. They had a few drinks and ordered dinner, and Kate and Jeremy headed out afterwards to shoot pool at one of the taverns in town. It was a fun, relaxing evening, and Kate was smiling as she let herself into her townhouse just after 11:00 that night. She had managed to forget Cole for several hours, and that, in her way of thinking, was a really good sign. She would make it through this.

She had just pulled off her coat and scarf when there was a knock at the door. Thinking that she had left something in Jeremy’s car when he drove her home, she pulled the door open without looking to see who was there. And it wasn’t Jeremy. Cole Russell was standing on her porch in a long, dark gray overcoat and a scowl on his face. Pushing himself into her townhouse, he pulled off his coat, tossed it onto the couch, and loosened his tie.

“All right, Kate. Who is he?” he glowered.

Kate was taken aback. “Who is who?” she managed to ask, closing the door behind him and leaning against it.

“No games, Kate. The guy that you were with tonight. I saw you at Ed’s.”

Kate just looked confused, then realized that Ed’s was the tavern that she was shooting pool at tonight. How on earth had he seen her, and why was he so upset about this now? she wondered. “Oh. That was Jeremy. I’ve told you about him.”

But Cole crossed his arms and moved until he was standing directly in front of her. “You also told me that you’re just friends, but you looked pretty damn cozy at Ed’s. Are you dating him?”

“No.” Kate’s response was half-defensive and half-defiant.

“Kate, if you’re not telling me the truth…” Cole took one step closer.

Damn. Now he was beginning to crowd her. She swallowed hard. “Then what, Cole?” she asked.

Reaching out a hand, he curved it around the nape of her neck, forcing her to look up at him. “Why were you there alone with him? I thought you were working late, then going out with friends for dinner.
