FIFTEEN
The server had just returned to the table with my card receipt when my cell phone buzzed in my pocket. I didnât recognize the number, so I sent it to voicemail and picked up my purse. I waved to Macy on my way out and checked for a voicemail after I got outside on the sidewalk. It was Archie asking me to call him back. âHi, Archie. Is everything alright?â
âNothingâs wrong. I was just sitting here thinking about the fact that what we discovered today might help your brother and your boyfriend figure out how that boy was killed, but we still donât know who killed him. And we still donât know whoâs been in the house at night and how theyâre getting in.â
âThatâs true, Archie, but itâs a start.â
âI was also thinking that if thereâs one secret passage, maybe thereâs other secrets we donât know about.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âLike maybe an entrance to the house thatâs hidden somewhere that someone could use to get in and not be seen by the cameras. I thought you might want to come back out here tonight and walk my rounds with me. Maybe we can find where theyâre gettinâ in.â
It took me all of two seconds to answer. âYou know, Archie, you may be on to something. Iâll be there in twenty minutes.â
I ended the call and sent Macy a text to let her know that if I wasnât home when she got off work, not to worry. Iâd be home a little later. I didnât tell her anything else, because she would worry herself sick until I got home.
Evidently, Archie had notified the gate guard that I would be coming. He waved me on through without so much as looking up. Archie was waiting on the front stoop of the cottage and met me at the car as soon as I got out. I clicked on the flashlight I had pulled out of the emergency kit in the car, a Christmas gift from Dave a few years back. He was working late more often, and he wanted me to be prepared in case I was ever stranded. He also made me take a conceal carry course and bought me a little handgun, but I could never remember to take it with me anywhere. âFat lot of good it does in that bedside drawer,â I could hear him say.
âLetâs check the front entrance and windows first.â Archie led the way across the front lawn and up the steps onto the porch. Trying the knobs and rattling the doors, we moved on to windows. He methodically moved around the perimeter of the house, trying every window to make sure it was locked tight.
âYou do this every night?â
âFor the last forty years. Only nights I missed was when my missus passed away. I never left her side for those last two days.â
âIâm sorry. When was that, Archie?â
âShe left me in 2000. Coming up on twenty years. Seems like yesterday.â
âI know what you mean. My husband passed away two years ago.
