SPELLCASTING BASICS

What is a spell and how do you cast one? If you’ve been practicing witchcraft for a while, skip this section, but if you’re new here…Welcome! I want to use this chapter to give you a crash course in the basics. Basic spellcasting has seven parts, as described below.

Creating and Planning

Casting a spell requires creativity and planning. First, decide what the goal of your spell is and what ingredients you’ll need to complete it. Make a list and gather those ingredients together. Decide if you’ll speak any words during the spell and, if so, jot those down. Choose your words carefully. The things you speak during a spell can often manifest literally. Don’t ask for a lover who is obsessed with you and can think of no one else unless you’re prepared to have a stalker on your hands! Write down a step-by-step guide to casting your spell, which you can refer to before or during casting.

If you aren’t sure where to start, refer to Part II of this book, where I’ve suggested some spells.

Cleansing

Before casting a spell, it’s a good idea to cleanse yourself and the area in which you are performing the spell. Cleansing yourself can be as easy as taking a shower or you can do a more elaborate ritual bath. Add rosemary and sea salt to your bath for cleansing and protection. Dip your head under the water or pour it over your skin. As you watch the water drain from your shower or bath, imagine negativity, problems, and anything else that might cloud your mind wash down the drain with the water.

You can use smoke cleansing to rid yourself and your space of negative or stagnant energy before casting a spell. One note: don’t confuse smoke cleansing with smudging. Smudging, which is usually done with white sage, is an appropriated term taken from indigenous religions that actually belongs in a larger ceremony in a closed practice. There are so many herbs to choose from that don’t steal from someone else’s sacred traditions!

Instead of cleansing with white sage, consider using bundles of dried rosemary or bay leaves. You can also burn them like loose incense by lighting a charcoal disk inside of a fire-proof container, sprinkling the herb until it begins to smoke (it should be smoky, but not flaming!), and carrying the container around the room.

There are other ways to cleanse if you aren’t able or would prefer not to use fire. You can bless water in a squirt bottle and spray it around the space. You can even add herbs from the herb section of this book to enhance its cleansing and protective abilities.

Ringing a bell three times is also an effective way to clear unwanted energy from a space.

Protection

Witches need protection and protection is, in fact, one of the oldest forms of magic. Throughout history, there have been many spells, crystals, and talismans said to ward off negative energies, physical dangers, illness, and “the evil eye.”

What do witches need protection from? Firstly, other people’s energy.
