Karisa made her way to the Dean with an important question. After all, it was a common practice at the celebrations and dances of her realm. Surely, it wouldn’t be all that different here. And if it were, well, the only way to know for sure was to ask.

She sensed the heat of the alchemy professor’s gaze, and for a moment, she had the urge to turn around and run back to the safety of the crowd of students.

Why did it feel like he was searching for something? What did he expect to see as he stared at her with such intensity? She looked away, concentrating on the Dean. When she reached Wicasa, Mulder turned to look out over the expanse of the dining hall as if he’d no idea she was even there.

“What is it, Miss Euterpe? Is there a problem?” Professor Minjarra leaned over to ask, and then she followed it with a little giggle.

Karisa grinned back. She imagined it wasn’t often this grand lady lost any of her control. It was nice to see Minjarra could have a little fun.

“No, Professor, there is nothing wrong. I just have a question.”

She smiled as Kagali turned and nodded to her. For a second, something glowed in his eyes, but it was gone again as he blinked and looked away. Mato waved at her from the end of the table, and she waved back, grinning as he swayed on his chair in time to the music.

In her peripheral vision, she saw Mulder lean forward and reach for another glass of the punch and swallow half its contents.

Wicasa smiled. “If the professors have no objections to dancing with the students, then I don’t see a problem.” He laughed then as his transmutation professor chuckled and nodded her compliance to Karisa’s request. “However, you may find the students would rather dance with one another.”

Karisa grinned at this and pivoted so she could look at the crowded dining hall and took in the wonderful atmosphere. “You may be right there, Dean Wicasa,” she said as she turned back to him, “but it would be an insult to my family’s traditions if I didn’t ask.”

The Dean nodded and then turned to Minjarra, who broke out into a fresh gale of giggles.

“Well, Inala, would you care for another whirl, or is your dance card already full?”

The transmutation professor stood, stumbled, laughed aloud, and leaned on the Dean’s arm. They moved down to the dance floor as music from the mortal sixties played. For a moment, Karisa stood there, getting a feel for the music.

Where have I heard that before? Of course, it was in London.

Her mother had told Karisa all about the ‘swinging sixties’ and how she’d met four young men one day. She’d listened to
