26 HALFMOON WEST
Scenic rating: 8
south of Leadville
Like Elbert Creek, Halfmoon West is a quiet campground surrounded by excellent recreational opportunities, but it’s barely used. The only busy time is in August during the Leadville 100 ultramarathon, when the campground is turned into a medical station. Halfmoon Road is the first climb, and any runners who can’t pass a medical exam are not allowed to continue. The rest of the year, this campground is virtually unused. It contains three loops in a lodgepole pine forest. The sites are large and mostly far apart from each other. The first loop (sites 1-4) is very close to the road. The second loop (sites 5-11) affords more privacy. The back loop (sites 12-16) is on a hill above the rest of the campground. These are the most secluded sites in the campground.
Campsites, facilities: There are 16 sites for tents and RVs up to 16 feet. There are no hookups. Site 14 is pull-through. Picnic tables, grills, and fire rings are provided. Vault toilets and drinking water are available. Leashed pets are permitted.
Reservations, fees: Reservations are not accepted. The fee is $17 per night. Cash or check only. Open Memorial Day-Labor Day.
Directions: From U.S. Highway 24 and 6th Street in Leadville, take U.S. 24 south four miles. Turn right on Highway 300. In 0.8 mile, turn left on Halfmoon Road. In 1.2 miles, turn right on County Road 11. The campground is on the left in 4.1 miles. This dirt road has potholes and washboarding but does not require 4WD.
