Chapter 15

At first the drive had been silent. They had stopped for gas, and while Shane went in to grab some drinks for the road, Vee texted Durran to tell her they were on their way. It was dark at that point, a little after 9 p.m., but the afternoon and evening had been a whirlwind of activity. Shane had made the decision to leave the city, and everyone jumped into action.

She looked up, glancing into the convenience store to see if Shane was coming out yet, racking her brain as she picked at the strap of her bag. She tried to anxiously anticipate what kind of conversation they would be having on this journey, but her nervousness fell away when she felt the low throb and hum of a Witch.

Her eyes darted around, looking for the source, settling on a woman filling up her own car with gas a few cars away. The woman had a strange, more intense, throb than Witches usually gave off. It almost reminded her of the thumping she could feel when a Fae was around. This woman didn’t have a glamor, though. She was most certainly a Witch. Vee watched her for a moment, trying to determine if this was merely a coincidence, or if she should be worried. She was a powerful Witch. Vee could see the magic swirling around her, clinging to her and shimmering with every movement. She was older, gray hair tumbling down to her waist and over her shoulders, but not so old seeming that her movements were stiff.

The way the magic surrounded her made Vee think she had recently done a spell on herself or some sort of enchantment. Not every Witch Vee had come across seemed to glow with magic. It was at these times that Vee was thankful she could see and feel things others couldn’t. The humans around them took no more notice of the woman than anyone else at the gas station. Vee took note of the car, taking down the part of the license plate she could see that read “GT7,” just in case she felt like they were being followed.

Shane climbed back in the car, breaking Vee out of the anxious trance she had put herself into, watching the woman.

“What is it?” he asked, noticing her heart had an uncomfortable rhythm and speed to it.

“I… there’s a Witch over there,” Vee said, shifting her eyes back to her. Shane looked over too, watching her for a moment as she set the pump back. It was then that Vee and the Witch met eyes. There was a cold intensity to the brief look they shared, like prey and hunter seeing each other before the chase. Vee’s heart started pounding in her chest.

That was all the explanation Shane needed to start the car and gun it. If they were following them, he would make certain they would lose them before they got on the highway. The tension in the car continued for about twenty minutes.
