Almost an hour later, we sit at Nickâs secret special place at the exact same table we sat at the first time I came here.
I order eggs, bacon, and toast this time. Nick raises his eyebrow once Iâve finished telling Minerva my order, but then proceeds to order an omelet with bacon, sausage, and home fries.
âSo, the crypt. Letâs weigh the pros and cons,â he says, sipping his coffee astutely.
I place my palms flat on the table. âLetâs.â
He taps a finger on the side of the coffee mug. âIf we go, thereâs a chance we die.â
Nick says nothing further, and I furrow my brows. âNot to point out the obvious, but thatâs one con, and zero pros.â
He sits back in his chair. âI donât see any pros.â
âWell, let me enlighten you.â I fold my arms and lean over the table. âIf we go, thereâs a chance we find something helpful, something that can help solve this murder mystery. If we go, thereâs a chance that we find something that proves beyond all measure, you are completely innocent. If we go, thereâs a chance we find something that can stop this monster and save its next victim. And since you pointed out earlier that it seems to be targeting your former lovers, I might be on that list.â
Nick stiffens at my last statement, fingers tightening around the handle of the coffee mug.
âFirst of all, I would never let that happen.â His eyes flash dangerously. âSecond, while you make some valid points, what if we go to the crypt and get attacked or killed by this monster?â
I hold up a finger. âBut what if this monster doesnât exist? Kassi said it was a rumor.â
âRhi, there has to be something guarding it. They wouldnât keep things down there if anyone could get to them.â
âMaybe itâs a unicorn,â I suggest somewhat wistfully.
Nickâs lips twist in a frown. âThat wouldnât necessarily be a good thing.â
My mouth drops open as Minerva sets our food down and tells us to enjoy. Nick picks up his plate and dumps half of his home fries on mine.
âHey, you donât have to-â
He holds up a hand, silencing me with his wolf smile. âYou know youâre going to ask for some eventually, so I thought Iâd save you the trouble.â
I try to hide my own smile but fail as I shove a forkful of home fries into my mouth. I take a sip of coffee then clear my throat meaningfully. âListen, Iâm going to be transparent with you, which is a rarity for me, so keep that in mind for future reference.â Nick raises an eyebrow, pulling one side of his mouth with it. âIâm going down there whether or not you decide to come with me. And if you donât, I completely understand, but you should know that Iâm doing this with or without you.â
His face turns blank, but he stares at me intensely. âI should have expected that. You wouldnât be the girl I-â He releases a huff of air.
