Chapter eleven

A few days passed since the duchess’s grand arrivals at the inn—and all over the sheets of Ryker’s massage bed. Those days were spent mostly in bliss for all parties involved. Indeed, from Ryker’s perspective, he had entered something of a Golden Age.

The Inn was more successful than ever before, thanks to the duchess’s sponsored expansions and the word of mouth that customers offered on both sides of the border. They had also paid some adventurers and soldiers to make and repair the paths that led from other villages to the inn, which helped immensely. Even Ryker’s relationship with his women was somehow far less resembling a minefield than it had been when the harem first came into existence and started to grow.

Every day, things just seemed to work out with the girls. On the days when Thraki was free, all the other girls would mysteriously be occupied with chores and tasks that made them unavailable. This was true for all of them. Vestra seemed to have a day with him every week, as did Samaya, as did Brook, and even the elven duchess and the taurian milkmaid somehow had their schedules line up in the most convenient ways possible.

It would have been spooky if it weren’t so convenient. Ryker began to suspect foul play—coordination behind his back, and the notion amused him so much that he resolved never to ask. It was far funnier if it were just an assumption he could make rather than anything he knew beyond the shadow of a doubt.

Today, he predicted, would turn out to be Darina’s day if his calculations were accurate. Indeed, it’d been about five days since she last conveniently made her availability known after all the other women had announced their preoccupation with other tasks. That suited him wonderfully. Darina was a rather sunny woman to spend time with, her cheery disposition making her a pleasure to be around.

After finishing his morning chores, he shot the taurian beauty a wink as he walked in through the door.

“Good morning, Master Hayes,” she cooed at him in her lovey-doviest tone, her voice sweet enough that it felt like a song. “Is everything taken care of?”

“For the most part,” he replied. “Winter’s not going to stand a chance against us, and it should also slow down the monster attacks that people have been reporting.”

Darina nodded keenly. “Oh! Do you have any plans for this afternoon, Master Hayes?”

Here it comes, Ryker thought to himself smugly. “Why, no, Miss Muchmilky, not anything particularly busy. As it so happens, I think Thraki, Vestra, Brook, and Elmielstra will all prove rather unavailable today.”

“Heavens! But then you’ll be all alone!” she gasped with a hand to her lips.

“I’ll be alright,” he said, grinning. “Unless—would you like to spend some time with me today?”

Ryker and Darina’s relationship had begun to travel down the harem trajectory a bit more easily lately. Though he hadn’t slept with her yet, the previous week the two of them shared a kiss after Ryker helped express the last drops of milk from her breasts.
