CHAPTER FIFTEEN

"Marie invited me and Cassidy to have lunch at her house," Polly said. "If I called, she'd meet us downtown somewhere instead. I know she'd love to see you."

Jon looked at his empty plate and then at her. "Lunch? After I ate that?"

"Ray didn't eat anything."

"That's his problem."

Ray shook his head. "Both of us have work to do this afternoon. So far, this trip has felt more like a vacation than a work trip."

"He is such a downer, but he's right," Jon said. "My inbox climbed over three hundred this morning and that’s after I've weeded out the trash and spam. If I don't manage some of these things, I'm going to be in trouble. I have seven to eight hours ahead of me this afternoon."

"Did you hear back from Allegheny Systems?" Ray asked.

Jon nodded. "They want to discuss the contract, but it's a go. I'll fly up in two weeks after Jeremy has had time to dig in. He's leaving on Monday."

"Good." Ray grinned at Polly. "The two of us are rarely in the same place at the same time. We discuss most of our clients first thing in the morning."

"Video calls?" she asked.

"If I'm decent," Jon said. "Ray thinks that four thirty is a great time to start the day. He doesn't understand that some of us have lives and those lives don't like being awakened because he's already started drinking coffee."

"Only on Tuesdays," Ray said. "Our clients in the UK and Europe prefer to have conversations when they're in their offices."

Polly shook her head. "I told Marie we'd be there by eleven thirty. If you have that much work, we probably won't see you tonight, right?"

"Not tonight," Jon said. "Tomorrow's Tuesday."

"You know that means it's three thirty in the morning here in Iowa, right?"

He flashed his eyes to his brother. "I'm in hell. Everyone tells me that Iowa is heaven. They're wrong."

"Can we help you get Cassidy and your things to the car?" Ray asked.

"Thanks. I can do it."

"We're going that way." Ray reached down and pulled Cassidy up and into his arms. "Polly tells me you're going to visit your grandmother."

"And Molly," Cassidy said. "She's my friend."

"The daughter of the girl who works for Henry," Polly added.

Jon laughed. "Oh, we know. Her father was a friend of your dad and he asked for your help finding her when she ran away from home. Colorado, right? Her mother won't have anything to do with her and she had a baby while she was living with you. Wasn't she chained …"

Ray hushed him and gestured with his head to Cassidy.

"Sorry," Jon said. "How am I ever going to get used to having small children around? I never know when to keep my mouth shut."

"You figure it out fast," Polly said. "If you don't, they repeat things at the worst possible times. This one was mute for the most part when she moved in and sometimes I didn't even realize what I was saying. After she began talking, one day I heard her tell Marie that smoking was a disgusting habit.
