After I settled into a routine at school, it dawned on me how little I had compared to other students. It wasn’t immediately obvious to me that I had less than other people, but at school that fact was clear. For instance, instead of having a box of crayons with thirty-two or sixty-four crayons in it, I had a box of eight crayons. And when we used paint or glue, I had to cover my desk with a black plastic bag instead of a desk cover with a cool design on it. I hated having less and being different and felt a sense of relief when Vue got me a bigger box of crayons and a proper desk cover.

I quickly became friends with some classmates. I liked Jane, who was tall, clumsy, blond, and kind. Steve and Mike, the twins, were the coolest kids in class, and all the girls wanted to hang out with them. David, one of the few kids smaller than me, was fast and athletic. A boy named Kevin once invited me to play at his house. It was the first time I had been in an American’s house, and I was amazed at the number of toys Kevin had, especially Tonka trucks. Finally, there was Justin, the kid I wanted more than anything to be like. Justin’s hair was always in place, he wore clean sweaters and nice pants, and more important, he was always pleasant and kind. Of all the students in class, he was the most well-liked by Mrs. Wilford, a wonderful teacher who cared very much for me. There were many good people in class, and no student like Sy to whack me with a meter stick, for which I was very grateful.
