BLACKWOOD

As much as I’d like to spend every day at Duncan House overseeing things and trying to convince Cat to join me in the barn for another shag, I can’t let my business fall completely by the wayside, especially with Christmas getting closer every day.

The holidays are when restaurants, bars, hotels, casinos, and consumers alike create the most considerable demand for Blackwood Aged Gold Label scotch. I need to personally make sure that the factory can handle the request for increased production and that our subcontractors for the specialty bottles and labels needed don’t fall behind either.

Between that and helping at Duncan House, it’s definitely akin to having two full-time jobs. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. Scotch is my passion. And I’m growing more passionate every day about Catriona and keeping her safe. I’m even starting to feel like I might be falling in love.

It’s the keeping her safe part that has me lying awake nights. Even if I’ve managed to keep prying eyes off the farm and out of Duncan House, there’s bound to be something more in store. Only it isn’t Norval I’m worried about. I’ve made it very clear to Moira that she’s to stay far away from Cat, her sisters, and Duncan lands. Since the storm fight with Blaire back in the summer, she’s complied with that. And that’s exactly what has me worried—Moira, off in her proverbial cave, licking her wounds and plotting vengeance—with Norval as her puppet and extra muscle.

It would be a waste of time for me to plan another break-in. By now, she and Norval both know that I’ve replaced Robena’s renovation crew. So, I think I’ll let Norval continue on his path to get whatever he thinks will help his cause out of this ridiculous arrangement with Blaire. I’ll focus my attention instead on Moira, and I’ll face her head-on, in person. She’ll see that Norval has failed so far, and the brains behind any further plans will be hers. Not that she’ll reveal anything specific—she knows I’ll just tell Cat, and we’ll double down on our own efforts to thwart her. But I will piss her off. That’s guaranteed. And angry people always make mistakes.

I just hope that she doesn’t get so angry and determined that she tries to directly harm Cat or her sisters again. Coming after me is one thing. But I will not tolerate her harming the Duncans in any way, especially Catriona. I won’t share this with Cat right now because I know it will upset her too much, but if it comes to her life or Moira’s, there’s no contest. And I’m not above sacrificing Moira’s to save Cat’s.

I try not to dwell on such dangerous and lethal possibilities on the morning I set out for Edinburgh. With Moira, the element of surprise works best. Just as she showed up at Blackwood uninvited and unannounced, I’m returning the favor today. I don’t care if I’m interrupting anything or not; it might be kind of fun to drag her out of bed from whatever poor man she’s glamoured to get him there.
