“I can’t believe it,” Shane Mac Donald said for the fifth or sixth time as he sat in Melanie’s office looking at the photos arrayed on her desk that she’d taken of Jonathan Archer and Mac Donald’s wife outside the hotel.
Melanie didn’t attempt to offer any conclusions about what took place. That wasn’t what she was hired to do, but she could see that Mac Donald had connected the dots in his mind, and was faced with the likelihood that his wife was a willing participant in a sexual relationship with her boss.
“Do you want me to continue the investigation?” Melanie asked after a while.
Mac Donald looked up from the photos. “What more do you think you can find?”
“I’m not certain,” she replied. “It may still turn out that your wife is the victim of some sort of blackmail and her appearance at that hotel Saturday was coerced.”
Mac Donald nodded. “I’m sure of it. She wouldn’t do that unless she felt she had no choice.”
“Then you want me to proceed?” Melanie asked.
Mac Donald nodded.
“And you still don’t want me to talk to your wife?”
“No,” he replied shaking his head. “I don’t want her to think I don’t trust her.”
Melanie could understand his sentiment, but wondered if he was being unrealistic. Sometimes the best way to find out something is to ask a direct question. “Did you bring that list I asked for of her friends with their contact information?”
“Yes,” he said, reaching in his jacket pocket. “Here it is.”
Melanie took the list. “Does the name Mary Beth Cousins ring a bell?”
Mac Donald thought for a moment. “I believe a woman by that name worked at Archer’s firm at one time. Why?”
“She sued Mr. Archer for sexual harassment,” Melanie answered, “but the case was settled out of court.”
Mac Donald’s eyes opened wide. “Shit. The bastard.”
“I’m going to try to get a meeting with her. Perhaps she can shed some light on Mr. Archer’s behavior towards the women in his office.”
Mac Donald nodded. “Good. So there’s still hope that . . . that she’s being forced to . . . you know . . . have sex with him?”
“There is,” Melanie replied. “There is.”
