Chapter Eight

Luci had headed back to Ottawa right after lunch. She’d said she and Jaqi had things to talk about. That did not sound good.

But I had plenty to keep me busy, and she had promised to be back in time for the reburial. I hoped Jaqi would come back with her—I could use all the friends I could get.

When I arrived home, I stayed in the car for a moment. I didn’t know why my heart pounded; everything looked normal. But just as I reached for the door handle to get out of the car, I noticed a shadow by the side of the house that didn’t look right. It had moved, when none of the other shadows had.

Instead, I rolled down the window and leaned my head out. “Who’s there? Come on out, I’ve already seen you.”

I saw the shadow move again and heard someone beat feet out the back. There was a door from my back garden to the street behind. They would be long gone by the time I got there.

I got out of the car and looked around but didn’t see anything amiss. So, I decided to forget it.

I checked my front door, and it was still locked, so I opened it and went in. I decided my imagination had been playing tricks on me. Lord knows my nerves were shot.

Speaking of shots, I poured myself a small one of my fanciest gin and relaxed into my armchair. I just needed to shut my brain off for a few hours.

I must have dozed off because the next thing I knew Luci was shaking me awake. She had two suitcases by the door and was biting her lower lip. Her eyes were puffy and red.

“Sweetheart,” I said, “what’s going on?”

She didn’t answer, just crouched at my feet and put her head on my knees. That worried me.

“Luci, did something happen with Jaqi?” Tears filled her eyes and one slipped down the side of her face. “Luci, sweetheart, just tell me what’s wrong.”

“Oh, Vee. Jaqi just let me leave. We had a fight, and she just let me leave.” She sobbed in earnest.

It took a while, but I finally got her calmed down. At least enough to tell me what had happened.

It seemed Jaqi had been putting all of her time and energy into her new book and a new assistant. Luci felt abandoned and had tried to talk to Jaqi about it, but it turned into a fight.

I rested my head on top of hers and wrapped my arms around her. I didn’t for a moment believe that Jaqi had stopped loving her, but I understood her fear and pain. This couple had always been so close, like the world contained only the two of them.

I sighed deeply. Things seem to be falling apart all over. First Bee’s death and her lawyer being murdered, then the threats against me, and now this.

Chocolate. That was what we needed. I eased Luci off of my lap, then pulled her to her feet.
