Chapter 11

By the time Belinda woke up for real, she had very little memory of what either she or Bennett actually said over the phone. But she did remember he wasn’t thrilled that his whole living room and kitchen were taken over by cupcakes. But he may as well get used to it. If they were going to be together, then he had to realize that sometimes his life would turn into cupcake heaven.

Bennett met Belinda and Aubrey at the door with his arms folded, glancing around behind both shoulders to demonstrate the scope of their cupcake operation the night before. The trays covered his coffee table and couch and every flat surface from the kitchen table to the sliding door that led out from the living room to the patio.

“Wow,” she said. “You really don’t have anywhere to sit.”

Bennett didn’t move as she kissed his cheek. “Just give me some warning the next time.”

“If I’d given you warning, I would not have had anywhere to put my cupcakes.”

“You know,” said a voice from the kitchen, “there’s this place called your house. You could have kept them there.”

Belinda lit up as soon as she heard him. “Jonas!” She rushed over, wrapping her arms around his neck. “I’ve missed you. It’s not the same with you on vacation.”

“Sure it is.” Jonas grinned, his green eyes twinkling. “You just have to work harder.”

She pinched his arm. “Tell me about it. And with hardly any results.” She started to sit on a stool by the island, but realized it had cupcakes on it. Bennett’s eyes glinted as he came around, but she ignored the satisfied look on his face. She would deal with her mess in a minute. Right now, she had business with her favorite detective. “You need to talk to Detective Diaz. She’s of no help to us whatsoever.”

Jonas arched his eyebrows, like he’d never heard of this. “Trouble with the case?”

“Not if she would be willing to give us a little leeway and share. The only real trouble comes from the fact that she refuses to communicate. We’re involved with this, we could be useful if she’d let us.”

Jonas traded a glance with Bennett, and Belinda suspected they’d already been talking about this. She set her hands on her hips, glancing suspiciously between them. “You’ve been talking about me, haven’t you?”

Jonas shrugged innocently. “Not you specifically. Just the case in general. Bennett was filling me in.”

Belinda narrowed her eyes. “Yes. Filling you in on my run-ins with Diaz.”

“Maybe.”

Belinda glowered across at Bennett, who wasn’t fazed. She sighed in exasperation. “She’s impossible!”

“Interestingly,” Jonas said, “she feels the same about you.”

“You spoke to her?”

“Technically, she spoke to me. She wants me to talk you out of this.”

Belinda arched her eyebrows. “And are you going to?”

“Talk you out of this? Nah. I told her it’s a losing battle and I save my energy for things I can succeed in.”

“Like snoozing on the beach like a cat?”

Jonas gave a lopsided grin. “Exactly.”

“Give me advice then.
