I hated the defeated look on Ainsley’s face. If I ever met the asshole who’d up and left him, I’d make sure he paid for treating Ainsley like he had. I couldn’t stop myself from wondering how much of a connection he’d felt with me the night before, because I’d never felt closer to a man I’d fucked. I didn’t know him at all and yet, when I was inside him, I felt like we’d been made for each other. That might sound sappy as fuck, but there was just something about Ainsley that made me want to hold on to him.

“So why here?” he asked. “Why this location for your cabin? Or is that off-limits too?”

I decided to let him change the subject. For now. “Years ago, I used to come to New Hampshire with my family. I grew up in Albany, so it wasn’t a long drive for us. There was a ski resort several miles north of here that we would come to several times each season. When I found this land for sale, it seemed perfect. It’s close enough to Thornton that I can get supplies when I need them, but remote enough that no one bothers me—at least, until you.”

He smiled. “It’s beautiful up here.” He shivered and wrapped his arms around himself.

“You’re cold.”

“I—”

“Go sit by the fire, and I’ll bring you a fresh cup of coffee.”

“I can get it myself.”

“I told you to go sit by the fire.”

“An obedient boy? Is that what you want?”

“You think you can be that for me?”

He grinned. “Maybe.”

I doubted he had anything on underneath my sweatshirt. I wanted to push him up against the wall, lift it up, and drive right into his delicious ass. I shouldn’t touch him again. I could easily become addicted to the way he made me feel. He thought I was dangerous, but he was a danger to my separation from the world, to my belief that I didn’t need anyone. “Do what I said.”

He rose from the table, and I made myself focus on the coffee pot. When I brought his mug to him, he wasn’t sitting on the couch, he was standing in front of the bookshelf, looking at a picture of me and my friends, Giorgio and X. We were still in the army then and still young enough to think we were invincible.

I didn’t know why I kept that picture around. I didn’t need anything reminding me of the past, but every once in a while, our happiness in the photo made me smile.

“This is you.” Ainsley’s voice was filled with wonder.

“It was.” Bitterness came through in my voice.

“Are these the friends who helped you build your cabin?”

I nodded in assent.

“This guy.” He pointed at Giorgio. “He looks familiar for some reason.”

“He lives in Boston, so I suppose you—”

“I know! I’ve seen him in Bacon and Bakin’, the coffee shop where I like to work.”

If he frequented that shop, he probably had seen Giorgio. “Another friend of ours owns the tattoo shop across the street.
