Annie shuts the suitcase. âAll packed.â
âI am starting to feel much more optimistic than I did earlier,â Ursula admits.
âI wish I could say the same.â Annie sets the suitcase on the bench at the foot of the bed. She checks the clock. Itâs almost midnight. She wants only to crawl under the covers and forget everyone and everything. Has this been the longest day of her life?
From downstairs, she hears a key turn in the lock, then the front door creak open. âHello! Hello! Where is everybody?â Sam calls.
Ursula looks at Annie. She grabs her wrist. âHeâs home.â
âWeâre in the bedroom,â Annie shouts back.
Samâs feet make slow thuds on the stairs, a sign heâs as tired as Annie. She knows he will not be happy to see Ursula sprawled on the bed heâll want to jump right into. He will not be happy, either, to spot the battered suitcase, which is distinctly not Ursulaâs.
He stands in the doorway. He points at the bench. âWhatâs that?â he asks.
âIâm taking my daughter away on a little trip,â Ursula explains.
Sam frowns. Mustard splatters his shirt; a residue of flour dusts the knees of his pants. Dark circles rim his eyes, and his shoulders slump with exhaustion. The timing isnât great, Annie realizes, but when is it ever? âWhatâs going on?â he asks.
âArabella is coming back with me to New York. Tomorrow.â
âTomorrow!â Sam turns to Annie. âIs this true?â
Annie nods.
âBut why?â
âYour wife needs a vacation,â Ursula clarifies.
âI would love nothing better than for you to join me, Sam,â Annie says. âBut one of us has to mind the shop.â
âAnd this all has been decided? Tonight?â He looks at his watch. âAll between ten and twelve?â
Annie nods again.
âI assume this is Ursulaâs doing. And that youâre just going along with her wishes?â
âNot exactly, Sam. I think it might be nice â¦â
âNice!â Sam exclaims.
âWell, fun ⦠I mean â¦â
âOn your own?â
Ursula takes over. âShe wonât be on her own. I havenât spent much time with my daughter, as you yourself are completely aware, Sam. The opportunity arose, and I was able to make the arrangements.â
âHow long?â Sam asks Annie.
âNot long,â Annie consoles. âIf you donât mind â¦â
Sam sighs. He shrugs in resignation. âSorry I reacted so abruptly. My stomachâs a bit upset. Besides, itâs late. Iâm bushed, and you sprang this on me.â
âIt was spur-of-the-moment. I was as unprepared as you.â
âIf this is what you want. If this is your own decision.â
âI have not twisted your wifeâs arm, if that is whatâs bothering you,â Ursula interrupts.
Annie adds, âIt is what I want. It is my own decision. Though Iâm sorry Iâll be leaving you in the lurch.â
Sam relents. âDonât worry. Maybe Megan will agree to more hours. If I need to, Iâll get extra help.â He brightens. âHey, you can check out sandwich shops in New York, take photos with your cell, get some ideas we can use when we expand.â
âAre you intending to expand?â Ursula asks. âEveryone at tonightâs ceremony was just raving about your hors dâoeuvres.
