Philias began to cry and couldn't continue. His grandmother held him. With tears in his eyes, Master Isaac said, "The lady and the gentleman in your poem are his mindling mother and father. They died as you have written. You may want to visit their graves before you leave Robisohm."

"Oh God, I don't understand. Forgive me, Philias. I intended no harm. I didn't know that by shutting out my inner voices I was killing life. How can that be? All of you, please forgive me. Perhaps I should return to my own world and leave you in peace." I moved away and couldn't hold back my tears.

Master Isaac held me gently. "You must not blame yourself for consequences you couldn't know or understand. There's enough pain and sorrow in the world without taking blame for what you did not intend. Philias's mindling parents died because they too eagerly wanted to see the outer world. But they didn't possess the power to do so. The only way they could do so would have been through your creative endeavors. So, they waited, hoping to become alive in the outer world through your creativity."

"I don't understand."

"Let me explain. When humans create, the mindlings who are the source of their creation become part of that which is created. All forms of art are mediums through which creators become part of that which is created. All forms of art are mediums through which creators' mindlings are shared with others. That's why aesthetic appreciation can be such a transcending experience. A great work of art literally takes on a life of its own. Didn't Philias describe the processes of creativity, intimacy, play, and ethics?"

"Yes. But are you saying that mindlings can live in the outer world through these processes?"

"Yes, indeed. Some mindlings gain immortality that way. To name a few examples, the mindlings known as Achilles, Othello, Lancelot, Captain Ahab, Humpty Dumpty, Hamlet, Dracula, Ophelia, and Obi Wan Kenobe live. I could go on for days listing these living creations. Some created individuals can have greater influence on humans than do their friends and lovers. "Unfortunately," he continued, "Philias's parents, Sir David and Lady Rebecca, never saw the outer world because they were never created there. They died from atrophy."

"My atrophy?"

"You're not to blame. Let's move on. The reason you're here is because we saw the tears in your words. Few humans cry for those who die within them. Your sorrow was unusual. On that day we decided to find a way to bring you to us, because you mourned our loss as we did. We didn't realize at the time that a crisis would be the condition under which we'd meet. You can't escape from us; we're made of one cloth and are all in this together. Whatever the cost, we must save ourselves." Master Isaac took the poems from Philias. "Enough of this self-indulgence, let's focus on our present problems. But first, John, I know you have many questions, as I have for you. It's rare for someone from your outer world to enter ours.
