Don’t let Fred’s diminutive stand fool you: since 1967, it has been a giant in its Washington Heights neighborhood, dishing up food and frozen custard to nearby residents, such as Milwaukee’s mayor, and to the police officers who work across the street.
Fred’s is called a drive-in, but with a mere handful of spots and no carhops, it’s more of a walk-up custard stand, especially in winter, because most of the seating is outside at picnic tables.
Fred’s offers vanilla, chocolate and ripple custard in cones and cups or in pints and quarts to take home, as well as a variety of sundaes, including the traditional turtle and banana split, and slightly different takes on familiar favorites like the dusty road, to which Fred’s adds caramel sauce.
You can also get malts, shakes and root beer floats with custard. The chocolate custard soda, composed of vanilla custard, chocolate syrup and seltzer, hints at the Brooklyn egg cream. Fred’s also has some unique offerings, like the Slushicle, a flavored slushie with a scoop of vanilla custard. Create your own sundae from numerous toppings and candy bits. Or try the Grandfalloon sundae (vanilla custard, butterscotch, chocolate sprinkles, whipped cream, cherry) or Georgia Sue’s Delight (vanilla custard, hot fudge, hot caramel, crushed toffee, nuts, whipped cream, cherry).
