The sky was threatening rain when I walked out of the apartment into the parking lot, so I opted to take my truck to work rather than hopping on the back of my motorcycle. If the weather had allowed it, today definitely would have been a morning to enjoy a ride. As therapeutic as riding when I was upset or angry could be, it was even better when my mood was as high as it was that day. It felt like I was soaring, and I just wanted to keep the rush going.

Even without the bike ride, I still ended up getting to the garage with a grin on my face so big it stretched my cheeks. I sat in the parking lot for a few seconds trying to bring it down a notch, but there was no use. This high wasn’t going away anytime soon. Not after a morning like that coming after a night spent with Maya in my arms.

Her coming home and climbing into bed with me woke me up, but it was more than worth it. I would happily miss out on some of my REM cycles to have her there in my bed with me every night. And it was exactly what I intended. That second bedroom could go right back to being just a spare room now. Maybe a guest room. Or a room that was just for fun if we wanted a new setting.

My steps were almost bouncing when I made my way down to the garage. Darren was crouched down on the floor tinkering with his bike when I walked in. He looked over at me and smiled, shaking his head.

“I was all geared up to make fun of you for not being here earlier than the rest of us, but that stupid grin on your face tells me you really wouldn’t care,” he said.

“No, no I don’t,” I said. “I’ll be right back. I’m going to put my jacket in my locker.”

I walked around to the bank of lockers in a small room off to the side of the garage. Taking off the light jacket I’d thrown on in case the rain came, I stuffed it into the locker.

As I was standing there unloading my wallet and the bag of snacks I’d brought with me, I realized that in the distraction of the morning, I hadn’t taken the time to make Maya lunch like I always did and that made me feel bad. I didn’t want her to think I had just forgotten about her, or that I wasn’t going to try anymore now that we seemed to be settling into a relationship.

I couldn’t exactly go back to the apartment and make something for her or add her usual sticky note, but I could make sure she knew I was thinking about her. I grabbed my phone and called my favorite little pizza shop. I ordered her a pizza and a salad to be delivered, then asked the manager to make sure the delivery driver sent me a text when he arrived at the apartment.
