There are multiple components to the process of change, once the commitment to change is made. One is the experience of therapy. Most of the therapy available in prisons has been in the form of “behavioral” programs aimed at reducing negative behavior—that is, behavior that is risky and dangerous. However, according to a review conducted by psychologist Ian Barron and colleagues, there is little evidence that such efforts sustain long-term behavioral change. Why? The problem with such approaches is that they typically don’t deal with the underlying developmental dynamics that give rise to and sustain the problematic behavior to which they are addressed.
What is at the core of those underlying developmental dynamics? The answer is what Bessel van der Kolk, Robert Pynoos, Dante Cicchetti, and their colleagues have called “developmental trauma.” This recognition has given rise to and support for “trauma-informed” interventions. When it comes to treatment programs for teenage killers, my go-to resource is psychotherapist/criminologist Kathleen Heide. She has spent decades applying her intelligence, training, insight, and compassion to the question “What kind of programs are needed for teenage killers if they are to become rehabilitated and transformed?” When I posed this question to her in 2016, this is how she responded:
