Chapter Two
The registry book soon appeared, floating in from the hallway. She had no idea how it moved around the mansion, but come on, this was its kingdom. Thereâd be nowhere on the grounds and within the buildings where it couldnât go whenever it saw fit.
She sighed and flopped down onto her bed. Then she got up when she realized how dirty she was. She patted down the covers. The registry book floated close enough that she could see as words appeared over its central page. âThe bed can be cleaned. However, if you continue to injure yourself, it will be much harder to do your work.â
It had a point. Rather than roll all over the bed, she sat on a seat nearby. She grabbed her knee. âHeal me. Get rid of all of these damn injuries. Wait, crap. You canât,â Emma spat.
âWhy not?â
âBalthazar has seen most of them.â
âWe can heal the injuries he has not seen. You appear to have been punched in the stomach repeatedly. That is not to mention the damage to your face.â
âHeal the stomach. Give me something for the pain. And maybe help stabilize my knee. Apart from that,â she shot up, regardless of her aching body, âIâm fine. Iâve got a lot to do. Itâs time for me to do it.â
âI suggest first that we head to the headquarters and debrief.â
She grabbed her shoulder and eased into the move. Every single one of her muscles creaked and groaned like a bridge ready to fall, each pylon now far too weak to hold it up. âI feel like hell.â
âFollow.â
The book floated toward the wall.
Emma frowned. âI can do a lot, but I canât move through walls.â
âIn this mansion, as long as I am by your side, you can move through anything.â
Sure enough, she could. Because as the registry book approached, the wall hollowed out. It produced a tunnel â the same tunnel that led to the headquarters.
She didnât question what was going on. She was way too tired and achy.
She walked down the stairs. She had to lean on the registry book every third step.
She finally made it into the headquarters then collapsed into the main seat. The castors moved out with a groan from beneath her. She palmed her face, let her hair fall over her hand, then finally looked up with a wince. âDo you know what happened? Iâll tell you what happened. Barry tried to kill Lawrence. I stopped him, and,â her voice shook, âBarry was killed by a curse.â
âDo you believe that the Lindleys are aware that you dispatched him?â
âI didnât dispatch him,â Emma spluttered quickly. âI didnât kill anyoneââ
âThat is not what we mean. Do you think the Lindleys are aware of what you did?â
Emma didnât have to think hard about this. Nor did she want to. Every time she brought up the thought of Barry, she could see him writhing down there on the dirt by her feet, his curse consuming him. Sheâd never be able to get that image out of her head for as long as she frigging lived.
