My friend Doreen shared a wonderful book called ‘Shamanism as a Spiritual Practice for Daily Life’ by Tom Cowan. It has been so helpful to me.

He says, ‘The focus of this book is “core shamanism”: the key elements of traditional, indigenous shamanism that are found worldwide and can be incorporated into one’s daily life, similar to the way you might follow spiritual practices such as yoga, meditation, journal keeping and prayer. Core shamanism as a spiritual practice does not require any specific religious beliefs, but it invariably encourages practitioners to discover animism: the ancient world view of our ancestors that all created things-humans, animals, plants, landscapes, elements and seasons-have an intelligent, communicative life force. Most modern people have little familiarity with this view of the universe.’

I certainly was never taught that all of creation has an intelligent life force. This has been such a thrilling discovery for me over the last few years. As I think about it now, it seems pretty egocentric that humans would assume that they are the only ones who possess this. We might give credibility that animals do but I don’t think it occurs to most people that plants do and even things we don’t consider to be alive have this life force. But it’s so expansive and beautiful!

Thank you for sharing this path with me!

Mary
