Chapter Fourteen
âYour beautiful hands are all torn up.â Emma sounded on the verge of tears as she applied an antiseptic to my palms, which had indeed gotten torn up when I landed on them out on the street.
âIâm glad I put my sweatshirt on not a minute before it happened, or my arms would look like they do.â When I realized there were tears rolling down Emmaâs cheeks, I pulled my hand back. âLook at me. Iâm fine.â
âYou might not have been. I canât stand to think of what mightâve happened if you hadnât jumped out of the way in time.â She ran a hand under her eyes. âSorry to be so emotional, but thatâs not the phone call a person wants to get. That their sister was almost hit by a car.â
Not almost hit by a car. That would imply an element of innocence. Accidents happened. People took their eyes off the road because their phone rang or their coffee spilled.
An accident didnât involve the revving of an engine, the flooring of the gas pedal.
We both turned toward the door when it opened. Joe walked in, shaking his head. âNobody saw anything. I canât even get a decent make on the car. Everybody was too concerned with you.â
âYou make that sound like itâs a bad thing.â Emma put an arm around me, and I fought against the impulse to flinch away. Really, I wasnât hurt badly, but most of my body ached from the force of the impact with the ground.
âOf course, I donât mean it in a bad way. Itâs just that I wish that out of four people, one of them wouldâve had the presence of mind to take a look at the car.â He looked over his notes, scowling. âThen again, with it being as dark out as it is now, I doubt there wouldâve been much to make out. Especially since according to all accounts, the driver peeled away.â
âThey did. Like a bat out of hell.â
Emma sniffled. âSorry. Itâs just a lot to deal with.â No kidding. I wondered how she would feel on my side of things.
Lola hopped up on the couch and lifted a paw to tap my arm. âThis is new.â She had never done that before, not even when I was dog sitting during Emmaâs honeymoon.
âShe does that when she senses somebody is hurting or upset.â Sure enough, the little Maltese gave the back of my hand a gentle lick before she curled up next to me, snug against my leg. âSheâll watch over you now.â
I wished I could pet her, my hands were still a mess. âThank you, sweet girl.â She lifted her head just enough to look up at me, then lowered it again and closed her eyes.
Joe stood in front of us, folding his arms, looking every inch the cop. âAny ideas who might have done this?â
âI bet it was that lady who called you.â Emma snarled. âI wish I could get my hands on her.â
âLetâs not jump to conclusions.
