Chapter fifteen

Monday, November 7

Chris

We spent the rest of the weekend touching each other. In hindsight, edging with so much of the month left wasn’t our brightest decision. I don’t regret one moment.

Felix has a spot below his ribs that makes him squirm. He loves when I play with his earlobes. Behind his knees are so sensitive. The second the clock strikes December first, I plan on making him come over and over.

A knock at my door startles my attention back to the office. Eve pokes her head through, hands clutching a file.

“I have a question, sir.”

I shuffle some papers on my desk. ‘Sir,’ always makes me uncomfortable. “Uh… you don’t have to call me sir. Like I’ve said before, Chris is just fine.”

She nods and sits across from me, but stays silent.

“Your question?” I prompt.

She dabs her tongue to her pink glossed lips. Her hair’s done in a half style and curled. She’s wearing a skirt that’s more fitted than the suits she usually wears. The blouse has a vee cut that dips a touch lower than her usual modest cuts. Either Layla got a hold of her for a makeover or…

She brushes a curl behind her ear and puffs her chest out. “Layla says if I want something to go for it.”

“That’s her motto.” I nod in agreement.

Eve licks her lips again, and I guess she doesn’t like the gloss texture. “I wondered if you’d want to get dri—”

I hold up a hand. “Let me stop you there. I’m flattered. But…” What do I say to keep her from feeling crushed beyond measure or embarrassed? “I have a partner.”

“Oh. Oh! I didn’t realize. Vanessa said you were single. But yeah. No. I wasn’t aware you had a girlfriend.”

Of course, Eve would do her research and ask my legal assistant. Vanessa is lovely, but I’m a little jealous of how well Felix and Beth work. Vanessa likes to bitch about things to the point I don’t utilize her as often as I could.

“Boyfriend,” I say.

Her eyes widen. “Oh! I had no idea you were—”

“Bisexual.” I shrug. Hmm, that didn’t feel so weird. “Most people don’t know. It’s not like I go announcing my sexuality to everyone.” I watch her reaction. Asking Felix to embrace his incubus side, I should embrace my bi-ness, even if I’m telling a little white lie. We haven’t talked about making things official. But in my heart, we already are.

Eve lets out a breath. “Thanks for rejecting me gently. This won’t be weird, will it?” She waves between us.

“We’ll be fine.” I smile to put her at ease. She’s not the first associate that’s asked me out. But I’ve made a rule not to dip my pen in company ink. That doesn’t include Felix, of course.

She stands to leave.

“Keep up the confidence.”

Her laugh is the loudest I’ve ever heard her. “I’ll try.” Then she’s out of my office.

Eve’s a good egg. Just needs to be more sure of herself. All this time, I thought I intimidated her.
