CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Rex came home for a quick dinner. He asked why there was a rodent in a ball running around the house and why Philby was on her side, passed out. After filling him in on our new boarder, he headed to the sheriff's office. Carnack needed an assist with the marijuana issue, and I had a feeling that particular problem wasn't going away anytime soon. Unless Teo was behind it. The sooner I solved this thing, the better it would be for our corner of the world.

After meeting with the Bladdersly know-it-all, what did I know about Doreen? Not much. In my experience, someone with no record who flies under the radar is either in witness protection or a spy. I didn't really know much about disgraced circus clowns, but I'd seen enough bizarre things in my short career with the CIA that I wasn't going to rule anything out.

Was Doreen a former witness in hiding? It didn't seem likely since she'd lived in Bladdersly all of her life and Kurt's grandparents knew her. Which left spy. Then again, perhaps she was just one of those people who liked to live off the grid. I knew a guy like that in Chechnya. He didn't like cameras, had no friends and, in fact, refused to give me his name. I later found out it was Khatu.

Khatu delivered goat's milk to the strongman I was undercover with. He never spoke to us or made eye contact, and no one was sure where he lived. It was said he had two dozen female goats and kept their names to himself too. Ron and Ivan tried to be friendly, but Khatu wasn't having it. It became such a mystery that I followed him one day back to his farm.

Turns out he had fifteen goats named after American film stars of the 1940s. There was Bette, Joan, Katherine, Ingrid, Elizabeth, and so on. How did I know this? Each one had a nametag on her collar. Khatu also had four Hungarian wives and fifteen children who served as goat herders. He also had three PhDs in animal husbandry, agriculture, and folk wrestling.

My point was, he was a hermit, and I ended up knowing everything about him.

Even though Kelly was investigating Doreen and Henrietta, I decided to see what I could find out. Turned out, you should never, ever google Henrietta the Hernia. My old colleague wasn't there, but I found a disturbing amount of hernia porn. I should've known better.

I typed in Henrietta Herschmann. You might be surprised to know that a lot of CIA work is done researching online. Field work is still important, but at Langley there are rooms full of analysts who do nothing but read papers, watch news reports, read minutes of governmental meetings, scan social media, and listen in on conversations.

Not really my speed but extremely useful information when returning a Chechen strongman's missing cat to ingratiate yourself. It's how I ended up working with Wally, Ron, and Ivan. Of course, Mittens ran away again and, that time, disappeared for good.
