He was severely wounded at Sharpsburg on September 17, 1862, yet by December 10 he was listed as in command. At the Battle of Chancellorsville, on May 3, 1863, McComb was wounded again. Listed as in command of Cadmus M. Wilcoxâs brigade on August 31, 1863, he took part in the Overland campaign of 1864 and the siege of Petersburg. McComb passed through grades and his promotion as brigadier general ranked from January 1865. His promotion to brigadier general followed in October 1861 and to major general from March 1862. Returning home after the war, he taught school in Tennessee and then moved to a farm in Arkansas. BEN MCCULLOCH ⢠Born November 11, 1811, in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Served in the Mexican War. As a boy, his right wrist was bitten by a young bear, which McCulloch killed with a butcher knife. There is no evidence that there was any permanent damage to his arm. In 1835 he learned of David Crockettâs expedition and wanted to join up. However, he arrived too late. He continued alone as far as the Brazos River, where, in January 1836, he became ill with the measles and did not recover for several weeks. In 1839 he had a duel using rifles at forty paces with Col. Reuben Ross and was wounded in the upper portion of the right arm. Ross, an experienced duelist, shot first; McCulloch did not fire. McCulloch carried his arm in a sling for many months and never fully regained its use.
