Chapter Thirteen

Gina lay on the floor, bum to the skirting board and her legs in the air. It was the only way she had found that helped soothe her back when she’d had a long day of carrying Sophia and then hunching over her desk in the evening.

But lying on the floor wasn’t very entertaining, and so she’d called Kath. It had been three weeks since they’d seen each other in person, and Gina was pretty sure that was some kind of record.

Back in the normal days, which is what Gina had started to call anything before March 2020, they’d see each other at least once a week and often more. Dinners, drinks, cinema trips, music festivals. That had all ended, and now Gina only ever spoke to her best friend via the phone.

The weird thing was that Gina had learnt more about Kath over the past three weeks than she had over the past ten years. With no distractions, they talked and ended up going down a hundred different rabbit holes of conversation.

Before, when they socialised, they were doing things and dropping fragments of conversations between drinks and activities. Now they just talked, and conversation flowed in a way it had never had the chance to. Gina didn’t like to admit that she quite liked the change.

“She’s gay,” Gina said. “I just know it.”

“You have the worst gaydar I have ever seen in a person,” Kath said. “Remember that woman in Hillingdon? I had to tell you that she was checking you out.”

“It was dark! I couldn’t see her properly.”

“She was staring at you like you were the last turkey in the shop on Christmas Eve.”

Gina laughed. “First, eww. Second, that’s not what we’re talking about here. I’m talking about Eleanor.”

“Why do you think she’s gay?”

Gina shifted a little, allowing her spine and neck to release a few small pops. “She’s nearly fifty and she’s single. She’s a doctor, a really good-looking doctor. She’s intelligent, funny, so kind and loving. You should see her with Sophia.”

“That doesn’t explain why you think she’s gay,” Kath pointed out.

“She says she can’t find the right man. Like, there’s something wrong with all of them. She’s been on blind dates, set up with friends of friends, online dating and nothing. She says she never felt anything for them. Any of them. Weird, right?”

Gina pushed her shoulders down away from her ears. Since the lockdown started, she’d been reminding herself constantly to lower her shoulders and relax. Not an easy task.

“Maybe she’s just not found the right man,” Kath suggested.

Gina scoffed. “Oh, come on. She’s been on, like, a million dates. She’s not connected with any of them. Not at all.”

“Maybe she’s fussy.”

“She said that. I don’t buy it, though. She seems pretty easy-going. No, I think she’s blissfully unaware that she would be far happier with a woman. Happens to people, we know that.”

“Gi…” Kath’s tone took a serious turn. “Are you interested in her?”

Gina laughed. “No. Of course not.” She paused. “Well, I mean, she’s good-looking—”

“Yeah, you mentioned that.
