Chapter 50

Lilly and Hassan got into Hassan’s car and pulled up behind Drew. “Are you being a little tough on her?” Hassan asked gently.

“No. Honestly, if I had ever behaved like that and my mother saw me, she would have knocked me right into the next week.”

“She would, you’re right,” he said with a chuckle. “But don’t forget, they’re young. Lots of kids behave like that.”

“I know,” Lilly said with a sigh. “I just didn’t expect Laurel to be one of them. It was disgusting.”

Drew led the way back to Juniper Junction. Lilly had hoped that the drive would calm her down, but she was still fuming when Hassan pulled up in front of her house. Laurel was already waiting for her on the sidewalk.

She leaned over and kissed Hassan lightly on the lips. “Wish me luck.”

“Good luck. And don’t forget, she’s just a kid.”

“A kid with a lesson to learn.”

“Let me know how it goes.” Hassan pulled away from the curb. Drew had already left.

Laurel was glaring at Lilly. “That was so embarrassing, Mom.”

“Don’t start.” She pointed at the front door. “Inside.”

Laurel stomped up the steps. Lilly unlocked the door and Barney leapt around the vestibule to greet them. Lilly laughed in spite of herself. “Barney, we missed you, too.”

Laurel knelt down on the floor to hug the dog.

“Sit.” Lilly’s instruction was to Laurel, not Barney.

Laurel sat on the sofa and gave her mother a baleful look.

“This will go much better if you don’t look daggers at me like that,” Lilly said. “I’m already in a bad mood and it’s only going to get worse if you don’t change your attitude.”

Laurel managed to wipe the look off her face. She sighed and sat back. “All right. What do you want to tell me?”

Hassan’s words echoed in Lilly’s ears. She wanted to kick herself for listening to advice from a man with no children, but he had a point.

“Laurel, I get it. You’re young, you’ve got a new boyfriend, you don’t care who knows it. But really, to behave that way in a public place is just unacceptable. It was gross. I had to listen to those wet, sucking noises the whole time I was on the peak. It ruined my enjoyment of the meteor shower.”

“Ruined it? Really?”

Lilly ignored the sass in Laurel’s voice. “Yes, really. I would have enjoyed it so much more if I hadn’t been subjected to the displays of lust playing out next to me.” Laurel squirmed at Lilly’s words.

“I’m sorry,” she finally mumbled.

“Just don’t do it again. It’s fine to kiss Drew, but when you’re in public you need to take it down a notch. Or two. Or three.”

Laurel rolled her eyes. “Fine. Can I go upstairs?”

“Not just yet. So that I’m convinced you have learned your lesson, you can’t see Drew for a week.”

“That’s not fair!” Laurel cried.

“Would you rather I come up with something better?”

“No.”

“All right, then. One week. Then you may see him again.”

“I saw Tighe and Sally Anne eating each other’s faces.
