Chapter Fifteen
Once on the other side of my gate, I cruised up my driveway toward the house. I was greeted by the sight of my dadâs van parked in front of the Laursensâ yurt. Just what I need, I thought.
Before I could even get out of the car, Mauser came bounding around the side of the tent and threw himself against the car door. His tongue was lolling out of his mouth as he jumped up and down, waiting to give me one of his painfully joyous greetings. Reluctantly, I opened the door and took my punishment like a man.
âOkay, okay, thatâs enough. Where is your master?â I asked him, vigorously rubbing his ears. âGo get him!â I commanded. Mauser ignored me, continuing to lean against me and drool like a fire hydrant. âFine, come on,â I said, leading the way around the yurt. I could smell an oak campfire burning.
Sure enough, on the other side of the tent I found Dad, his girlfriend Genie Anderson, Henry and Anna sitting around a small fire. Various iron pots and skillets lay on or beside the brightly burning logs.
âThere he is!â Dad said loudly as Mauser and I walked up. I couldnât be sure which of us he was referring to.
The front door of the house opened and Cara came out, carrying several bowls and silverware. She looked put-upon.
âI cooked up some peach cobbler in the Dutch oven,â Anna told me as she gathered some of the bowls from Cara. I took the rest and gave Cara a greeting kiss. She smiled appreciatively.
âYou look tired,â she said to me.
âAre you sure youâre not looking in a mirror?â I kidded her.
Genie and Dad were sitting next to each other on a couple of folding chairs that they must have brought with them. Mauser ignored both of them and went over to Henry, leaning back between his legs and letting the big man massage his head. They made quite the pair.
âI didnât know you all were coming,â I said to Dad, trying not to sound as unenthusiastic as I felt about the situation.
âHenry wanted to see Mauser and invited us over.â
He invited you over to my house, I thought, but immediately told myself to let it go. Actually, it was kind of nice to see all of the strange people in my life sitting around a campfire together. If you canât beat âem, join âem, I thought and pulled a lawn chair up to the fire.
After finishing a bowl of the best peach cobbler Iâd ever eaten, I reached over and took Caraâs hand. Her other hand petted Alvin, who was snoring lightly in her lap. The sun had gone down, leaving our faces lit by the flickering glow of the fire. Occasionally, the light breeze would cause a swirl of sparks to fly up from the fire, mixing with the stars in the sky. The warm night air was heavy with the scent of Confederate jasmine and the calls of a whip-poor-will echoed through the trees.
