4. CRIMSON EYES
âUghâ¦,â Rain groaned as he opened his eyes. The prickling pain had kept his slumber light. It honestly felt like he hadnât gotten any rest at all.
âAirâ¦?â
He immediately noticed something was wrong. He was still in the grotto, but Air was nowhere to be found.
Whereâd she go?
Rain sat up while holding his aching wound. Then he looked around for the silver-haired girl. Unfortunately, he found nothing.
âYouâre finally up,â a clear voice spoke to him.
âAhâ¦â
âDonât be alarmed. I wonât hurt you. And honestly, I couldnât even if I wanted to.â
The voice lacked any intensity, but its tone left a lingering impression in Rainâs mind. It came from the western soldier with reddish-brown hair, Deadrimâs partner.
âSad to say, but driving an Exeliaâs my specialty. Iâve got no real talent as a mage, and Iâm only on the battlefield thanks to Deadrimâs skills. Plus, I donât even have a gun anymore,â he said with a chuckle.
I think his name wasâ¦
âYouâre Isuna, right?â
âThatâs right. Isuna Cole.â
He was the man whoâd attacked the train alongside Deadrim. Isuna had damaged his leg when the car tumbled down the cliff, and while heâd gotten some form of first aid, he was still severely injured. He surely felt a great deal of pain, but his expression didnât so much as twitch.
âMy rank is second lieutenant. I never attended an officerâs academy, though. I simply worked my way up over the last ten years.â
âTen yearsâ¦â
Like Rain thought, he was a generation older. Given his maturity and leadership of the raid, though, he seemed even older than that.
However, even though he was a mage, Isuna had gotten promoted through regular channels.
Why is he
âOh, Iâm only here because Deadrim strung me along,â Isuna said after sensing Rainâs suspicious gaze. âIâm all right with an Exelia, but that about sums up my skills. Iâve got no other special abilities.â
The way he talks about herâ¦
His tone was friendly and warm when he talked about Deadrim. He didnât seem the slightest bit concerned, either.
ââ¦You can tell me more later,â Rain said. âSorry to change the subject, but the silver-haired girl who was with me and your partner are gone. Do you know where they went?â
âYes, I do. The two of them went outside around five minutes ago.â
âThey?â
Theyâd left the safety of the grotto and gone into the snow.
âYou know, to the mountains. They saw some lights and decided to investigate. Weâre cooperating for the time being, so they left me here to keep an eye on you.â
Isuna proposed they wait for the girls to return. However, sitting still and doing nothing made Rain feel like deadweight, which he hated.
âSorry, but no,â Rain said as he wobbled up to his feet. The wound made all his actions sluggish. âIâm going after them. If they saw a light, that means there are soldiers around here.â
âAre you sure? I personally donât recommend it, but I wonât stop you, either. Exceptâ¦â Isuna paused at that point and lowered his voice to a whisper. ââ¦If you chase after them, I think you may wish you hadnât after you see whatâs out there.
