That evening Mia and I prepared to head down to the beach again and infiltrate this exclusive party that was supposed to be held at some overpriced beach house. Cassie gave us the address she’d got from Steven just before he departed this world.

There was a small chance that the whole thing would go south on us, but we were used to finding ourselves on the wrong end of the stick.

When we weren’t busting in doors and impaling evil, we endured hours of frustration trying to track down the elusive suckers from hell.

Finn stood in front of me, staring at the button on my shirt then stepping back and adjusting it just a little while occasionally looking off to a computer screen that showed him squinting. It was a camera and microphone rolled into one. He and Jay would be set up inside the van a short distance from the house. When they weren’t munching on endless packets of Doritos or arguing over hot beach chicks they’d seen, they would be getting a bird’s-eye view of the evening through our buttons. At which point we would hopefully be inside. The goal that evening was to get in, rub shoulders with the freaks, figure out how many we were up against, and see what we could unearth. If we couldn’t locate those who had gone missing, we were going to lead Austin out and bring him back for interrogation. I know, easier said than done.

“There’s still something I don’t get,” Jay said looking at Cassie with a skeptical eye. “What makes you think my sister is alive?”

I knew it was a sore point for him. The very mention that she could be alive only made him think that he hadn’t done enough. But instead of showing some sign that he was hopeful, he funneled his frustration towards Cassie.

“Because that’s how they do it. They leave behind a portion of clothing that is bloodied. I’ve seen my brother. I know he’s alive.”

“That doesn’t mean my sister is.”

Her brow knit together. “There is no in-between with them. You are either dead or alive.”

“Wolves are known for dragging away their prey.”

“Listen, Jay, I know you and I got off to a bad start but I’m trying to help here. I want answers as much as you do.”

Jay sucked air in between his teeth and turned his attention to the equipment.

“Okay, go ahead and say something,” he said.

“Douche bag,” I muttered. Jay shook his head.

Meanwhile Finn was fumbling with the button on Mia’s shirt.

“You’ve adjusted it six times. What’s the problem?” Mia asked, growing more frustrated with every passing second. She was wearing cut-off jean shorts, flip-flops, and a light summer shirt.

“Your tits, I think,” I said. Finn had been infatuated with Mia for as long as I had known him. But he would never get in with her. Jay on the other hand was as a blind as bat when it came to Mia’s flirting. Though since returning to the Bay, I hadn’t seen him giving her the look he used to.
