Matthew took the cup of coffee from Mary and carefully set it down on the table. âWhen did you say Brenda contacted you about my wifeâs funeral?â he asked Betty.
Betty sipped at her coffee, glanced at Mary, and moved forward with extreme caution. âCousin Brenda didnât call me,â she explained. âThe woman who called me had a lovely voice. Sadlyâ¦Cousin Brendaâs voice sounds like aââ
âChipmunk, yes I know.â Matthew sighed. âHer voice is a constant nuisance to my ears.â
âItâs not her fault,â Betty said, becoming angry at Matthew. âCousin Brenda is a veryâ¦sweet woman. Itâs not her fault that her voice sounds like a chipmunk.â
âBe that as it may,â Matthew told Betty, âthat doesnât change the nagging voice into a rose petal.â
âCousin Brenda does not nag,â Betty insisted. âWhy, that poor dear is suffering inside of her very heart. Aunt Gennifer is close to the grave and that alone must be tearing Cousin Brenda to shreds. So donât you dare sit here and insult her, youâ¦youâ¦creepy old bat.â
âNow Betty,â Mary said, spotting the perfect opportunity to please Matthewâs good side, âletâs not be rude. Uncle Ralph is being very hospitable toward us. Cousin Brenda ordered us to leave earlier, remember?â
Betty stared into Maryâs eyes and quickly caught onto the game. âIâm sorryâ¦Uncle Ralph.â
âNot to worry, my dear,â Matthew told Betty, âyouâve been through a very trying night.â Matthew glanced down at his coffee and decided to take a sip. âSome nights can be very trying,â he continued in a sad voice that gave Mary the creeps. âSome nights more than others, Iâm afraid.â
Mary pretended to show sympathy and then carefully eased into a question that had been gnawing at her mind. âUncle Ralph,â she said, âthis mansion is veryâ¦uh, beautiful. If you donât mind me asking, or sounding too nosy, what did you do forâ¦or still doâ¦for a living?â
Matthew, acting like he enjoyed being called by the name of his murdered brother, pushed a bored smile to his face. âOh, my dear, I wouldnât want to bore you with suchâ¦dribble.â
âPlease,â Mary urged Matthew in a voice that sounded very authentic. âThis mansion is, well, fascinating. I would love to learn about its history and what you didâ¦or still do,â Mary quickly added, âfor a living. A man who owns this mansion certainly must be very interesting and not full ofâ¦dribble.â
Matthew, being a prideful man all his life, saw an opportunity to flatter a beautiful young woman. The one thing Matthew could never refuse in his entire life was a pretty faceâand Mary was very pretty. So for a few minutes he allowed his mind to walk down an arrogant path and forget the business at hand. âWell, if you insist,â he told Mary and took another sip of coffee.
âIâm afraid I do,â Mary said and motioned around the kitchen. âItâs a dark and rainy night, Uncle Ralph. A fewâ¦delightfulâ¦stories would really calm my nerves.â
âOh, yes indeed,â Betty added and quickly sipped at her coffee, hoping she didnât sound too eager.
Matthew smiled his creepy smile.
