Chapter 21

This time I didn’t wake up with my body folded up and sore from attempting to mold into the tiny couch. Instead, I was stretched out in the big, comfortable bed, my head settled into a perfect pillow and covered with thick blankets. But none of that really mattered. I could have been flat on the floor with nothing around me and it wouldn’t have fazed me as long as I had the one thing that set this morning apart from every other one for the last six years. Asia was in my arms.

I didn’t have to sneak off the couch and try to get into the bathroom without waking her up. I didn’t have to bring my clothes with me and try to scramble to get ready to avoid any more awkward situations. I could just nestle down deeper and hold her close, enjoying the smell of her skin and the brush of her hair on my chest. Occasionally she let out a soft, contented sigh, and I felt like I would burst.

Déjà vu brought me right back to my college days and the week of pleasure and sheer happiness I’d spent with her. I wrapped my arms tighter around her and pulled her close, stroking my face against her hair. She murmured in her sleep and buried her nose in my chest. She draped her leg over mine, bringing us even closer so there was no space between us.

Suddenly my heart felt tight. As much as I relished being close to her this way, I knew it wasn’t going to be so simple. I really needed to think about what happened and what it might mean. But we didn’t have the time to now. If I had my way, I would just order room service for the rest of the day and not move from the bed except to answer the door. But we didn’t have that option. Asia had another meeting with George that morning, and she wasn’t sure what to think about it. She knew she was going to be interacting with George more and even starting work. But that’s not what he sounded like in the voicemail we got the night before.

He must have called while still at the karaoke bar because there was a lot of noise and chaos in the background. Without any niceties, Ishko announced he expected Asia at the office in the morning. He wanted her to show him just how badly she wanted to work with him. The words and the coy tone he used made me want to punch him. It was going to take everything I had in me not to tear into him when I saw him again, but I would do my best.

Asia was devastated when she heard the message. We ignored the phone when it first rang, but the fact that he left a voicemail made her nervous. She didn’t want to miss anything important, and it turned out she might have if she waited until morning to listen the way I suggested.
