CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The guy had long dark hair pulled back in a man bun. He was wearing all black. He shook his head.

"I'll take him down to the station once he gets the all-clear," Rex said.

"He was following me, I think. He might be an assassin." I remembered what Marilyn had said about three killers sent by the agency. "I just don't know."

The young man looked at us thoughtfully but offered no explanation.

"And if you can't get anything out of him," I said rather loudly, "I'll send Hilly Vinton over to beat it out of him."

The kid's eyes grew wide. "No! You can't send her!"

I turned to my husband. "CIA. I'm guessing right off the Farm."

"Is she here? Is Hilly really here?" The kid looked around. "She can't know I'm here!"

"Why not?" Rex asked him.

It hit me. "You were one of her handlers, weren't you?"

"How did you know that?"

"Hilly's gone through so many, they're giving her the young ones now." This was the truth. Hilly terrified so many of her older handlers, or just didn't do anything they said, that they were using freshly minted agents. Honestly, Hilly probably didn't need a handler, but the CIA is very big on rules.

"She goes through so many handlers…" Rex searched for the right phrase, "Does she punish the albatross with CIA agents?"

I laughed out loud at Rex's attempt to use Hilly's euphemisms. "No. Nothing like that. They usually demand reassignment. Hilly's…well…Hilly. She can be a bit intimidating."

"She said she knew where my grandmother lived and that Nana's allergic to strawberries!" the kid squeaked. "Don't tell her I was here."

"That depends"—I crouched down in front of him—"on what you were here to do."

The EMTs walked over to talk to Rex, and he excused himself.

The kid started talking as he watched my husband walk away. "My name is Quinton Dumas. Langley was concerned that Hilly had gone rogue, which, frankly, scares the hell out of them."

I nodded.

"I thought I'd come here to finish the job. I just thought she'd run off to do one of her stupid hobbies. I didn't realize she was still here." He looked around nervously. It was possible that he thought Hilly had thrown him to the lions.

"Well, she's not here. She's actually at my safe house with my bodyguard at the moment. Are you still planning to kill me?"

"Hilly's protecting you?" His eyes grew wide. "Then I'm not going to be anywhere near you!"

Rex came over. "They've cleared you medically. Now what's this about you trying to kill my wife?"

"Your wife?" Quinton's eyes bulged. "They said nothing about you being married to the town cop! I've got to get out of here!"

"You're going to the station with me for the time being."

"Don't contact Langley," I added. "We might be able to use this."

"Did you see who threw you through the glass?" Rex asked.

Quinton's eyes landed on me. "I thought it was you!"

Great. I'd apparently attempted to kill another assassin. He did land in the lion pit though. I wondered how Betty knew.
