Preparing to write this book, I dug out some letters I’d written to myself as a record of my life at particular times. One of them was written a few months after my father died in 2001. I opened it up and realized I’d forgotten how hard his death had hit me. I wrote,

Since Daddy died, I have felt so low, so terribly, terribly low – as if I have nothing to live for and my loneliness has never been more acute. I am barely able to see the positive, which has always kept me going … I feel that the last ten years have been a decade of loneliness, no really fulfilling relationships … always spending most of my home time alone, alone, ten years alone, and I blame myself. All around me I see people in relationships but I’m unable to find someone for myself and I feel so terrible, so full of despair, that this is it for the rest of my life – loneliness.
