CHAPTER TWENTY

My heart nearly stopped at the sharp boisterous voice that came from behind us. Tegan and I spun around, and his clawed hands were just in time to block a blow from a heavy double-edged ax. The wielder was a behemoth of a man with a soiled shirt and tan pants. He wore boots heavier than most of my body and his muscles rippled beneath his clothes. The man also had a face only a mother could love, with a mixture of scar tissue and a permanently curled lip with one lazy eye.

Tegan smiled at the gruff stranger. “We were just looking for a nice camping spot.”

“Then ya found the worst spot,” the man growled as he pointed one blade toward us. “Now get up and march.”

Tegan cast a knowing glance at me and stood. I followed his lead and Tegan took the lead. He came close to the ax-wielding man and grabbed the stranger’s arm. Tegan threw him down to the ground and the earth shook from the crash. The man recovered in a second and swung his ax at Tegan’s feet. He leapt back and into me, causing both of us to crash to the ground with him atop me. We ended up in a pile of thrashing limbs.

The hulking man climbed to his knees and slammed the ax down at us. Tegan and I rolled out of the way in opposite directions and the ax was embedded into the stone. The man tried to yank his weapon out of the rock, but the force of the blow had sunk it deep. He grabbed the long handle with both hands and tugged. His grunts didn’t help him with the effort.

Tegan scurried to his feet and grabbed my hand. He yanked me to my feet and tugged me down the stones. The man let loose a roar and a shout came from the camp.

“Somebody’s there!” one of the men shouted.

Footsteps pounded the earth toward our location. Tegan and I slid down the face of a huge boulder and dropped onto a patch of earth. We weren’t the only ones there. A half dozen of the goons were waiting for us with a mixture of axes, swords, and even a cleaver. They also all had horrifically maniacal grins on their faces.

The man with the cleaver stepped forward and showed off his crazy eyes. Those same eyes were giving me a thorough looking over. “What do we have here?”

One of the guys behind him, a slimy creature with greasy hair, slithered his tongue out of his mouth and licked his lips. “Looks like a tasty little morsel to me.”

Another of the men marched forward and reached out for my hand. Tegan’s hands lengthened into claws and sliced the man’s arm causing him to drop his broadsword. Blood spilled out of the deep gashes and the man screamed and grasped his arm as he stumbled back.

“Get him!” the slimy man shouted.

The gang stampeded over to us and Tegan leapt into the fray with claws swinging.
